Description
The Mental Health Clinician is a member of the Behavior Education Support (BES) team. BES serves geriatric clients with Mental Health concerns in Long Term Care (SL5) and Supportive Living (SL4) facilities across Calgary. The goal of BES is to help clients to achieve their optimum level of health and to support staff to care for clients with complex conditions and challenging behaviors. The BES Mental Health Clinician completes in depth assessments and provides consultation recommendations for treatment to facility staff. The clinician focuses on building care facility staff’s knowledge, skills and abilities in care for mental health clients. BES works closely with LTC and SL4 staff, the Geriatric Mental Health Consult team, and the psychiatrists supporting the clients. This dynamic role works in several facilities across the city and combines clinical knowledge and application with capacity building for front line staff. This is an independent role requiring significant initiative to accomplish activities and strong time management skills. The successful candidate skills and attributes include: Experience working in a consultative role. Experience working in a multidisciplinary team. The ability to work independently in an outreach model. Ability to set priorities and manage time effectively. Flexibility in scheduling and adaptability to the culture and processes at a variety of sites. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of dementia syndromes and treatment practices. As a Mental Health Clinician, you will work as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team collaborating on the delivery of care for the needs of individuals, families and/or communities. You will be responsible for the intake, clinical interviews and screening of clients with addiction and mental health disorders. You will liaise with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and work collaboratively with other team members as required. You may have the opportunity to participate in program planning, development and to provide supervision to practicum students. This position is open to Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Registered Social Workers, Registered Psychologists, and Occupational Therapists.
Completion of one of the following programs: a Master's degree in Psychology, a Bachelor's degree in Social Work incorporating education in mental health assessment, brief counseling, and crisis intervention, a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy with similar educational components, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing with training and experience in mental health assessment, crisis intervention, and brief counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in Psychiatric Nursing. Active or eligible for registration with the applicable Alberta regulatory college.
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Social Work or a Master’s degree in Psychology. Full registration with a professional college under the Health Professions Act. Provisional registration not appropriate in this role. Current registration with the appropriate regulated licensing body in Alberta required. 2-3 years’ experience in Mental Health care providing assessment and therapeutic intervention to patients with acute and/or chronic mental health disorders required. At least 2 years’ experience working with geriatric clients in the last 5 years is required. Knowledge of clinical mental health disorders commonly seen in the senior's population. Strong computer skills, familiar with MS Office. A demonstrated track record of developing effective relationships with diverse professionals required.
Experience working in community or long-term care/SL4 an asset. Connect Care training/experience is an asset.
