Unit 58 is an Acute Inpatient Care Unit with a focus on Neurosciences and Hospitalist patients. Our unit is a quality improvement focused environment with an expectation of staff engagement in our efforts to provide excellence in care through assessment, evaluation and implementation. Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Licensed Practical Nurse is accountable for practice, according to the standards and practice defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and completes care within his/her scope of practice. The LPN will provide appropriate care, as delegated in accordance with AHS policies, procedures and established standards. The successful incumbent will be expected to be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: demonstrated proficiency in clinical assessment skills and sound nursing judgment; effective communication skills proficient in both verbal and written English and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively maintain collaborative working relationships with members of the multidisciplinary team; high functioning time management and prioritization skills, demonstrated problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution skills; demonstrated commitment to and participation in activities which promote professional and personal growth and development; creating innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues; actively integrates patient and family centered care principles within own nursing practice; compliance with the AHS Hand Hygiene policies. The LPN will demonstrate an understanding and compliance with the AHS code of conduct, self-direction within the scope of duties of the job required and consideration of patient’s comfort, safety, privacy, independence, choice. This position requires training in the Seizure Monitoring Unit, after six months of hire.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Recent Licensed Practical Nurse Inpatient Acute Care Experience within the last 2 years. To ensure your skills and qualifications are considered, please attach a resume. Must be able to work in a physically challenging environment: constant walking, lifting and bending are necessary. Must be able to assist patients with mobility deficits; ability to transfer patients to the stretcher. Strong critical thinking skills within the scope of practice, including clinical judgment and problem-solving skills. Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment required. Must be self-directed, organized, motivated and able to prioritize and keep pace in a busy environment. Must have excellent English writing and speaking skills.

2 years acute care Neuroscience/Medical experience in the last 5 years. Central Line Certification. Previous experience mentoring or preceptoring new staff and/or students. Patient teaching experience (both written and verbal). It’s Your Move training. Recent Connect Care training and proficiency. N95 fit test. Previous experience with working groups within the last 2 years. Previous experience with quality improvement initiatives within the last 2 years.
