The University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually. The UAH Adult Operative Services portfolio functions within a Level 1 Trauma Center providing surgical access to various specialties including, Neurosurgery, OHNS, Urology, General Surgery, Ortho Trauma, Plastics, Burns, Spine, iMRI, and Solid Organ Transplant Services. The Operative Services Portfolio encompasses the Adult Pre-Admission Clinic, Short Stay Surgery Unit, Operative Theatres, and Post Anesthetic Care Unit. This opportunity will provide the successful incumbent with access working within the Short Stay Surgery Unit. Working within a multidisciplinary team caring for adult patients, the LPN will provide care to patients being prepped for scheduled surgery, and post operative ambulatory patients receiving phase 2 post anesthetic care. You will gain valuable nursing experience working alongside skilled staff, in a fast paced and dynamic environment, supporting AHS’s commitment to providing safe, high quality, family centered care. The Licensed Practical Nurse in Short Stay Surgery collects and records relevant data pertaining to the patient’s health status, perception of their health situation and expectations for care prior to surgery, during hospital stay and upon discharge.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Certification and current experience with IV initiation and phlebotomy. Demonstrated excellent assessment, organizational leadership, and patient care skills. Ability to communicate findings (verbal and written) in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills. Proven reliability/dependability. Capable of working in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment with patients of varying mobility and high acuity. Must have the ability to deal with patients who are acutely ill in an unpredictable and stressful environment. Physical demands and requirements include: prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking; lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring of patients; reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching. Ability to see, hear, and stand (continuously for 5.5-7 hours per shift). Walking continuously for 5.5-7 hours per shift and lifting up to fifty pounds. Must have advanced knowledge of caring for patients who have had procedures where regional anesthesia and neuroaxial anesthesia has been utilized. Participated in patient care quality improvement and quality assurance programs. Responsible to provide proof of active registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and to maintain registration throughout the duration of employment. Five years of current adult surgical nursing experience and caring for patients in phase II recovery (within the past 3 years).

Advanced knowledge of multi-modal analgesia and chronic pain is an asset Advanced knowledge regarding ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery), STOPBang/OSA Screening, Infection Control, and Health Promotion strategies are an asset Computer literacy and experience with Connect Care an asset
