This is an exciting opportunity at the Strathcona Community Hospital. This facility offers a 24/7 Emergency Department, and a variety of Ambulatory, Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging services. The Licensed Practical Nurse position is the ‘front line’ representative in delivering care within the IV Therapy/Ambulatory Care Clinics. Based on a primary health care model, the incumbent functions within a multidisciplinary team, and is responsible for the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patient care. This work would involve, health promotion and prevention, health education, and treatment of illness and injury. The incumbent performs a variety of nursing related duties in accordance with clinical policies and standards. The incumbent must have strong judgement and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to participate in inter-professional collaboration. The Licensed Practical Nurse will play a key role in providing safe, quality, patient and family centered care, while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. The successful incumbent will be required to support all outpatient services/clinics at the Strathcona Community Hospital.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Successful completion of an approved post-basic study program as required within the scope of the assigned position (e.g. IV start, IM/IV/SC medication administration, etc.). Training and experience utilizing Connect Care; both for scheduling and EMR. Strong comprehensive patient assessment and decision making. Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and independence of practice in a highly functional team environment (balance numerous demands/conflicting priorities). Strong critical thinking skills, along with demonstrated time-management and organization skills in a fast-paced environment. Expertise in adult teaching and education. Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. Must be able to work in a physically challenging environment, constant walking, and lifting/bending necessary.

Minimum 1-year Acute Care/Ambulatory experience an asset. Preference will be given to those with recent IV Therapy experience. PICC care (dressings/occlusion therapy/ med administration), and therapeutic phlebotomy experience is preferred.
