The Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, the provincial capital, is a full-service pediatric hospital and centre for complex pediatric care and research. It is the only specialized healthcare facility for infants, children and youth in central and northern Alberta and has among the highest inpatient volumes of any children’s hospital in Canada. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse provides leadership in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care for the mentioned populations under both, University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) and Stollery Children’s Hospital, policies, and procedures. The Licensed Practical Nurse in the Stollery Inpatient Float Pool will utilize nursing processes through critical thinking, problem-solving and decision making while providing active education and mentorship for peers, students, patients, and families. Within the Stollery, there are opportunities for professional growth, which include participation in unit-based safety/education sessions, senior skill certifications, unit quality councils, as well as broader AHS initiatives. Position incumbents will be cross trained to Stollery Inpatient Units including winter surge beds.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Successfully pass the Stollery PEARS course (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization Course), completed in orientation. Successfully pass the Stollery Medication Administration exam. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrated initiative, accountability, problem-solving, organizational skills, and effective time management. Strong decision-making, assessment, and critical thinking skills. Ability to adapt and work within a fast-paced, and time-sensitive environment with competing responsibilities.

Experience with children with tracheostomies and medically fragile patient populations is considered an asset and preferred. Connect Care Training and experience consider an asset.
