The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family centered care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with the UAH and AHS policy and procedures. The Casual Surgery Float Pool is responsible for providing relief staffing to 9 18+ bed units consisting of Plastic/Reconstructive, 2 General Surgery units, Urology, ENT/Otolarangology, Trauma and 3 Orthopedic Surgery. We strive to provide quality care to patients received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit and directly from home and/or surgery clinics in addition to caring for patients received from other departments within the hospital from time to time. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment. The LPN is expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Successful candidate is expected to pass the medication calculation exam (80% score) provided by the surgery program within 14 days of orientation. Medication Calculation exams is provided during the surgery orientation days or scheduled by the CNE. The candidate has 3 attempts to pass the exam within the 2-week orientation period. The candidate must be able to work within a team environment and to effectively contribute to patient/client planning processes. Excellent communication skills, a compassionate and caring attitude, and attention to detail are necessary. Strong interpersonal, problem solving and conflict resolution skills are needed. Demonstrated initiative, reliability, flexibility and critical thinking. The LPN must be able to work in a fast paced, physically demanding environment, including standing, walking, lifting, pushing/pulling greater 25-50lbs, as well as reaching for patients who range from low to high BMI. Must not have any current activity restrictions, such as pulling, pushing, reaching and bending.

Ability to communicate findings concisely, accurately, in both written and verbal form, deal with stressful situations, prioritize complex patient care needs and workload assignment, while dealing with frequent interruptions. Maintain collaborative working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment. Strong patient teaching skills. Note: Rotation subject to change. Preference given to candidates with greater than 1 years of recent Ortho/General Surgery experience.
