Description
A Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with RAH and AHS policy and procedures. Staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital serves a unique inner-city population and we want to do it well. The Surgery Inpatient program maintains the expectation that all employees do so with pride, compassion, and respect. PCU 34 is a 30-bed unit providing care to orthopedic and ortho spine surgery patients. Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care units, and directly from home and/or medical clinics. We have collaborative nursing care on all shifts with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and health care aides working cohesively within the collaborative model of care. LPNs work independently and under the direction of a Charge RN. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program. LPNs are expected to direct and monitor the care provided by health care aides.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Candidates are required to write a medication calculation exam on interview. Failure to achieve a passing mark on the exam may impact decision to hire. Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills required. Demonstrated reliability required. Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Basic computer skills are required. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment required. This job is physically demanding, the incumbent will be required to assist with lifting, turning, and mobilizing patients as well as other physical tasks. Two years previous orthopedic and surgical experience preferred. IV, PCA, Epidural, Drains and Wound Care experience preferred. Experience with monitoring of Central Lines preferred.
