The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides safe and effective nursing care according to hospital policies and nursing care standards. Working within the full scope of practice, the LPN observes, monitors, reports, and documents changes in the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional state, assists the patient with activities of daily living and provides the patient and family with relevant information and teaching. Working as part of a care hub, the LPN is responsible to collaborate with other members of the health care team, delivering consistent quality care, to meet the needs of the patient. Staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital serves a unique inner city population and we want to do it well. The surgery inpatient program maintains the expectation that all employees do so with pride, compassion, and respect. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program. Must be able to think critically and respond to emergency situations. Position requires candidates to perform moderate to heavy work on a regular basis in order to ensure safe patient care and safety of unit staff. All staff are required to assist with mobilization of patients with a variety of ambulation needs and disabilities.

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Minimum 1 year inpatient nursing in Urology, Bariatrics, or General Surgery as an LPN. IV, PCA, epidural, TPN, Drains, Wound Care experience. Strong capacity for self-directed work and team work. Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills. Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Basic computer skills. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the surgery program.
