Reporting to the unit manager, the Instructor - Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE), Geriatric Mental Health, ECT, Ketamine, and Crisis Stabilization Unit will be responsible to educate and coach team members to promote the development and sustainability of clinical best practices, achieve comprehensive care planning, assist in implementation of evidence-based practice, and critically assess, evaluate, anticipate, and address risks to patients and staff safety. The CNE will communicate and model Recovery Alberta values, foster inter-professional teamwork, patient-centered care, and innovation. This CNE will possess advanced skill, knowledge, and experience in mental health nursing, with an ability to educate and mentor staff. Strong understanding of professional standards of practice and knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health continuum of care. The CNE will work independently and collaboratively as part of a team and be involved in program development and planning to deliver quality care to patients and families. The CNE is expected to have the ability in assisting staff to reflect on their practice in an approachable manner, with positive and effective feedback. This individual will be responsible for delivering and maintaining an orientation program and advanced learning needs for the inpatient team. Through clinical leadership, mentoring, coaching and feedback for staff, the CNE supports high quality, safe patient care that promotes a positive patient experience. The CNE must possess strong organizational skills with ability to plan/manage short- and long-term initiatives, plans, and projects. Demonstrated analytical, planning, teaching, and decision-making skills are critical.

As an Instructor, you will be an expert practitioner and key educator in support of both nursing staff and the multi-disciplinary clinical team. You will take a leadership role in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for nursing staff including orientation, compulsory and continuing education, and clinical development. You will collaborate with management and internal partners to promote standards of clinical, educational and evidence informed practice. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Minimum of 3 years’ experience within the last 5 years in Adult Acute Inpatient Mental Health Nursing Experience Required. Expert knowledge of mental health (diagnosis, psychosocial interventions, care plans, documentation, record management, Mental Health Act, MSE, suicide risk assessment, current applicable policy and legislation required). Experience and knowledge of addiction and mental health treatment modalities and evidence-based psychosocial interventions. Strong working knowledge/experience of inpatient aggression/ de-escalation techniques and ability to teach staff violence risk assessment and code white response. Strong working knowledge of physical/system assessment and ability to support staff in medical management of patients and code 66/ blue responses. Ability to lead/support debrief following an aggressive incident required. Ability to assist with complex care planning required. Skill and experience teaching/presenting to adult learners. 5 years Adult Acute In-Patient Mental Health Experience with understanding of basic medical conditions and procedures. Geriatric Mental Health and ECT Experience. Experience with psychotherapy modalities and group facilitation. Knowledge of community resources for Addictions and Mental Health. Experience with Quality Improvement Initiatives. Demonstrated leadership or clinical supervision of health care professionals.
