Description
This position reports to the Facility Manager and is responsible for the hands-on completion of work assignments using sound judgment in accordance with all applicable codes and Hospital Policies and Procedures. The Horticulturist is responsible for year-round groundskeeping, including snow removal. Skilled horticultural work relating to the care, pruning, and maintenance of interior and exterior plants and the overall health, presentation, and sustainability of all exterior campus vegetation. This includes oversight and maintenance of all campus trees, shrubs, flower beds, landscaped areas, and associated green spaces to ensure a safe, attractive, and well-maintained environment. The role implements comprehensive horticultural maintenance programs and is responsible for recommending and executing landscape design, development, and enhancement initiatives. Regular inspection of hospital and parkade grounds is required to ensure cleanliness and prompt removal of unsightly trash and debris from public areas. This position operates mobile grounds and snow-clearing equipment as required. A primary function of this role is to act in a supervisory capacity by providing work direction related to horticultural and groundskeeping activities. Responsibilities include oversight of maintenance workers, assigning and coordinating tasks related to campus and parkade grounds cleanliness, and ensuring work is completed to established standards. The primary work location will be the Royal Alexandra Hospital. However, operational needs may require support at other sites within the zone. Potential multi-site duties may be assigned at the direction of the FM&E Director or Manager.
As a Horticultural Specialist, you will supervise and participate in all aspects of grounds maintenance duties. You will be responsible for the planning, evaluation and implementation of an extensive horticultural program. You will utilize considerable initiative, judgment and knowledge in applying horticultural principles and techniques.
Completion of Grade 12.
Completion of a recognized two-year Horticulture program or equivalent certification (such as Master Gardener designation) is required. A valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is essential. The successful candidate must demonstrate experience with materials, tools, and equipment associated with groundskeeping, landscaping, horticultural maintenance, and snow removal operations, along with the ability to identify, assess, and prioritize maintenance needs within a complex campus environment. This role requires the physical capability to perform demanding outdoor work, including lifting heavy objects, operating equipment, and completing repetitive manual tasks. The incumbent must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and environmental extremes, including heat, cold, wind, precipitation, and uneven terrain. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision are essential, as is the ability to function effectively within a team environment. Demonstrated leadership skills to provide work direction and coordinate maintenance activities are required. The candidate must communicate clearly and professionally in English, both written and verbal, and work cooperatively with management, supervisory staff, and hospital personnel. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with building maintenance or work order management systems are also required.
Mechanical aptitude and experience with equipment maintenance would be an asset. Pesticide applicator license would be an asset.
