Description
The Health Care Aide provides patient care services under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Under the close supervision of the Program Manager or designate, the Health Care Aide is responsible for assisting the patients with their activities of daily living to facilitate comfort, safety and general well-being; and assisting in maintaining a clean, safe environment for patients through the application of universal precautions. The successful candidate will be required to work to full scope of practice as defined by the specific unit.
As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance by supporting activities of daily living and delivering support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this role, you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers across the continuum of care in home, community, and health care facilities. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs; assist with organized activities or programs; and observe and report on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, you will assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, while supporting effective communication with patients and health care professionals. PLEASE NOTE: Until a new hire provides proof of HCA certification, they will be paid at the uncertified pay grade in accordance with the AUPE AUX Collective Agreement.
Active or eligible for registration or practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) as a Health Care Aide, along with proof of education or completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.
Active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification. Must be able to speak, read and write English fluently. Must have one year recent nursing experience with the geriatric population and chronically ill. Ability to work as a member of a team and to request and accept direction as required. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Well developed time management skills. Must be able to work in a physically challenging environment; constant walking, lifting and bending necessary. Connect care training an asset. Experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
