Description
The Alberta Children’s Hospital is a warm and vibrant workplace, with team members, youth, families, staff and physicians partnering together to provide service to the children and families in inpatient units and ambulatory clinics. Within ACH ambulatory services, the Dr. Gordon Townsend Rehabilitation and Education Program provides intensive daily rehabilitation to children with physical disabilities within a classroom setting. As part of the Rehabilitation & Education team, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides direct care to assist in the activities of daily living, comfort and safety of the child/youth; supports them to participate in a variety of activities while they are attending the Rehab and Education program; and provides indirect services to support the overall provision of care within the program under supervision from a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN) or regulated healthcare professional. The Rehabilitation & Education Program operates in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and follows a modified school year schedule including planned breaks in the fall, winter, spring and summer; the HCA is not scheduled to work during school breaks or non-school days, except for summer camp programs. As the successful candidate, you will exhibit excellent communication skills and effective interpersonal skills, demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team, and be highly organized. You will demonstrate initiative, adaptability and flexibility to meet varying clinical and operational needs in accordance with the Health Professions Act.
As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.
Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification.
Adherence to the minimum competencies defined in the Alberta Health - Health Care Aide Competency Profile (2018) Registration with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (HCAs) Minimum two (2) years experience working with children with disabilities in a therapeutic setting Demonstrated knowledge of child development Ability to do heavy lifting (greater than 50 pounds) on a daily basis Demonstrated ability to transfer/lift children of varying ages and sizes Knowledge and experience in neurological conditions, rehabilitative service, and transition support Knowledge of computer applications BCLS-HCP certification
Certified as a Health Care Aide through a Government of Alberta licensed post-secondary institution using the Provincial Health Care Aide Curriculum
