Health Care Aide - Urology, General Surgery & Bariatrics

PCU 21 is a 28-bed unit providing care to Urology, General Surgery and Bariatric Surgery patients. Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care units, and directly from home and/or medical clinics. We have modified nursing care on all shifts with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and health care aides working cohesively within the collaborative model of care. Health Care Aides are expected to participate in documentation of their care. Staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital serves a unique inner city population and we want to do it well. As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance by supporting activities of daily living and delivering support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this role, you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers across the continuum of care in home, community, and health care facilities. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs; assist with organized activities or programs; and observe and report on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, you will assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, while supporting effective communication with patients and health care professionals.

Active or eligible for registration or practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) as a Health Care Aide, along with proof of education or completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.

Position requires candidates to perform moderate to heavy work on a regular basis in an HCA capacity in order to ensure safe patient care and safety of unit staff. This job is physically demanding, the incumbent will be required to assist with lifting, turning, and mobilizing patients as well as other physical tasks. Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills required. Demonstrated reliability required. Must be able to document work provided in patient's chart. Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment. Basic computer skills are required. Minimum two years previous surgical experience required.
