Description
AHS has been named among the top 75 Alberta employers and a top employer for diversity and young people. Discover a supportive employer, a career that fits your lifestyle, and endless opportunities for professional development. Here is an exciting opportunity to learn a new career as an Emergency Communications Officer (ECO) with EMS and Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Calgary. If you are a great communicator when both talking and listening, able to keep a cool head under pressure, you can be a calm, confident voice on the phone with 911 callers while collecting the necessary information to dispatch emergency crews, can quickly and accurately transcribe calls as they come in, prioritize tasks on the fly, and clearly relay essential information then we are looking for you! Candidates will undergo a multi-step screening process. Step one is an online pre-hire assessment, step two assesses your listening and typing accuracy, and step three is a job interview. The successful candidates will be offered a casual position with a start date of October 6, 2025; however, you will need to dedicate a minimum of four months of full-time hours with us to become fully trained. First, you will receive six weeks of paid full-time classroom training in our learning center following which you must successfully pass the final exam. This is then followed by a minimum three-month paid preceptorship where you will be paired with a buddy/mentor while taking live 911 calls before finally working independently.
As an Emergency Communications Officer, you will provide safe and effective emergency medical call taking and dispatch services to ambulances. Through established guidelines, you will evaluate and process emergency and non-emergency calls, be responsible for making key decisions and contribute to the EMS dispatch process and strategies.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification required; where the successful candidate does not currently hold EMD certification, the certification course will be provided upon hire.
Recently current CPR BLS (Basic Life Support) certification is required prior to start of training.
