Unit 23 - General surgery/Trauma is looking for a new Assistant Head Nurse. If you have a passion for general surgery, mentoring new staff, and supporting the unit to provide safe, patient centered care while using your strong critical thinking and communication skills, this job is for you. The preferred candidate for this position will have charge nurse or AHN experience, be self-reflective, open to change and have the ability to use evidence-based knowledge and a patient centered focus to support the functioning of the unit.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Minimum of 2 years of inpatient surgical experience within the last 5 years. Recent experience as an Assistant Head Nurse or charge nurse. Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team. Ability to demonstrate advanced problem-solving skills and communication skills that promote respect, positive team environment, and patient centered care. Ability to meet the physical demands of the job - lifting, transferring, standing for long periods. Ability to work in a busy, noisy environment and prioritize competing demands.
