Description
You’re a strategic, systems thinker and experienced leader who builds relationships and influences outcomes. Acute Care Alberta (ACA) is seeking a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to enable effective, sustainable service delivery to Albertans. The CMO is a key executive leadership position and is jointly responsible for establishing the vision, goals, and leadership for ACA. The CMO plays an integral role in service delivery oversight and planning for the acute care sector. Key to enabling effective, sustainable service delivery to Albertans, the CMO will lead the development of physician-related components of human capital plans and strategies to monitor and improve the quality of services delivered. You establish and foster positive relationships with local, provincial, and national stakeholders, including government departments and officials, to provide operational leadership and oversight to ACA programs and services, and to healthcare service delivery organizations that ACA is accountable to fund. Work location for this position is negotiable within Alberta. The FTE is negotiable between 0.7 to 1.0. ACA will oversee acute care services by working directly with service providers, including Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health, Lamont Health Care Centre and chartered surgical facilities, and with provincial health corporations responsible for cancer care, emergency health services and organ and tissue donation and transplantation. It is an exciting time to join Acute Care Alberta, a new provincial health agency in Alberta dedicated to overseeing the governance and coordination of high-quality, timely, and compassionate acute care services across the province when Albertans need it most.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) ensures the strategic planning and delivery of high quality, safe, patient and family centred care in compliance with laws, regulations, relevant professional standards of conduct, and policies. You contribute to the establishment of performance targets and indicators and will play an important role in the monitoring and analysis of health system performance data. You oversee the strategic application of leading practices to achieve clinical quality outcomes and improved performance. The CMO develops strategies and implement tactics to achieve successful engagement with a wide range of stakeholders in a complex environment. The CMO is accountable and responsible for all medical staff related matters and decisions and oversees processes and governance structures that enable effective physician planning on strategic and clinical issues. As the senior-most medical leader in the organization, you will liaise with senior medical leaders in other provincial health agencies, health service delivery organizations, contracted surgical facilities, and organizations such as Faculties of Medicine, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and the Alberta Medical Association. Additionally, you will serve as a key ACA spokesperson for medical issues, with both internal stakeholders (such as staff and physicians) and external parties (such as patients, the media, and other healthcare organizations and agencies). This position will be part of Acute Care Alberta effective April 1, 2025. By applying on this posting, if you are the successful candidate, you agree to and will become an employee of Acute Care Alberta.
Must hold a practice permit with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and actively practice medicine in at least one acute care facility in Alberta. At least eight (8) years’ leadership experience in health care operations including three (3) years’ experience in senior leadership roles in clinical services or healthcare operations.
The ideal candidate is seen as a provincial and national leader in the development and delivery of clinical quality and medical delivery. You have a successful record of achievement as a leader, including extensive experience in physician leadership, strategic planning and service delivery in large and diverse organization. You have experience in managing change and creating innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. You are an effective communicator with strong organizational skills, have a client-focused orientation, and commited to providing long-term quality services. You have proven ability in fostering partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve organizational goals.
