The Senior Engineer is a recognized expert within their discipline, responsible for leading the development and execution of complex engineering solutions and strategies across Air Canada’s fleet. This position drives continuous improvements in aircraft safety, reliability and operational performance, and supports cross-functional teams through technical leadership.

This engineering job includes direct support to the operations, therefore travel and off hours support is required.

Responsibilities

  • Establish technical, airworthiness and operational standards for propulsion systems.
  • Initiate and develop on and off-wing maintenance programs to ensure propulsion system’s performance meets customer and corporate requirements for cost and reliability.
  • Lead and oversee root cause investigations and drive corrective actions and improvements for significant aircraft and/or component issues impacting service, reliability and passenger experience to enhance operational performance and reduce costs.
  • Provide technical guidance, expertise and troubleshooting across functional areas, projects and teams to resolve high-impact issues and ensure alignment, including the implementation of aircraft modification programs, special projects, and fleet acquisitions.
  • Evaluate the technical assessment and cost/benefit analysis of complex Service Bulletins and Airworthiness Directives, and make recommendations for implementation strategies.  
  • Lead special projects related to fleet performance improvement and cost of ownership, maintenance burden optimization, etc.
  • Develop engine budget assumptions and monitor engine shop visits to ensure budgets are met.
  • Review, develop and obtain financial approvals for the implementation of Mandatory Airworthiness Requirements and Inspections/Instructions for Continuous Airworthiness.
  • Communicate technical information through the preparation and issuance of fleet campaigns, Engineering Controls (EC), and Engineering Instructions (EI) to ensure accurate implementation and support ongoing maintenance and operational needs.
  • Represent Engineering during multidisciplinary meetings, including Reliability Working Groups (RWG), by providing technical input and contributing to the identification and implementation of corrective actions with long-term impact that enhance fleet performance, safety and reliability.
  • Contribute to reduction of operational and maintenance costs by proactively identifying and implementing cost-saving opportunities through modifications, repair development and/or Maintenance Program optimization.
  • Prepare cost estimate, technical instructions and project evaluations on corporate initiatives, repair, improvements and new product design.
  • Design and develop engineering documentation in compliance with the applicable airworthiness standards and regulatory compliance with substantiation and justification for modification.
  • Provide technical liaison with Original Engine Manufacturers (OEM’s) and Transport Canada. 
  • Provide leadership through direct oversight of a small group of engineers and/or mentorship of junior engineers and coop students, fostering technical development and knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Provide on-site engineering support during off hours (overnight, weekend & holiday).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering is an asset), or other technical discipline or equivalent.
  • Must be a member (or eligible) of a professional engineering association.
  • 6+ years of engineering experience, with majority in relevant discipline.
  • 2-3 years experience in formally mentoring junior engineers or Students.
  • Viewed as subject matter expert and leader in their discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire others, manage cross-functional projects, and drive departmental success through effective decision-making.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively.
  • Pride in accuracy and good work presentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. 
  • Excellent organizational, time management and prioritization skills. Sound judgment and initiative.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and business needs.
  • Solid knowledge of most commonly used PC software, including Office applications, MS Project.
  • Willingness to be on call and to work flexible hours when needed.
  • Willingness to travel for training, industry meetings, etc.
  • Must be clear of any restrictions which will prevent entry into other countries.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and dependability to support overall team success in a fast-paced environment.
