Sunnybrook is the Regional Stroke Centre for the North & East GTA Stroke Network (NEGTASN). The Regional Stroke Program is responsible for providing leadership in the development, implementation and coordination of stroke care throughout the region and across the continuum of care.  The Regional Stroke Centre provides emergency medical management of stroke/TIA, specialized inpatient acute stroke unit care, and urgent and non-urgent secondary stroke prevention services and follow-up.

 

Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Regional Director, the Student, Stroke Projects will support key quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing stroke care delivery, with a primary focus on the Door-to-Needle Collaborative. In this role, the student will be responsible for identifying eligible stroke cases, conducting detailed chart audits, and ensuring accurate and timely data collection and reporting. They will collaborate with the project team members to analyze performance data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities to improve treatment timelines and care processes. Working closely with clinical and project teams, the student will contribute to data-driven quality improvement efforts that reduce administrative burden on frontline staff, improve system efficiency, and ultimately support better patient outcomes.

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Data Entry & Submission:
    • Identify appropriate patient charts for review.
    • Gather required data elements from patient charts, enter, validate, and submit data to the Door-to-Needle Collaborative, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
  • Data Analysis & Insight Generation:
    • Analyze data to identify trends, gaps, and variation in performance.
    • Highlight opportunities to improve door-to-needle times.
  • Quality Improvement Support:
    • Support the team in translating findings into actionable insights, contributing to improvement initiatives and tracking progress.
  • Coordination & Administrative Support:
    • Liaise with team members as needed and support basic project coordination activities.

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Current enrolment in a post-secondary program is required
  • Understanding of clinical documentation is required
  • Quality Improvement and process improvement fundamentals are required
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of intra- and interprofessional teams
  • Strong written and oral communication, critical thinking, care coordination, and time management skills
  • Experience with health data management and analysis is an asset
  • Stroke care knowledge is an asset
