On November 30, 2024, 9-8-8 was launched in Canada as a new national three-digit number for suicide prevention and emotional distress. In 2022, CAMH was announced as the lead for the coordination and administration of 9-8-8, and has acted in this capacity to lead and coordinate the implementation of 9-8-8 and manage the operations and post-launch activities. As of November 2023, this ground-breaking new service is available 24/7/365, in English and French, and accessible to everyone from coast to coast to coast. CAMH is working closely with the federal government and key partners from different groups and communities, provinces, territories and building on our work on Talk Suicide Canada, to deliver this high quality, evidence-based, equitable suicide prevention service to Canada.
Since launching, 9-8-8 has amassed a large quantity of data, having received over 300 000 calls and texts in the first year of service. CAMH is looking to meaningfully leverage machine learning/artificial intelligence and/or large language models and related research methodologies to analyze this data to better support process and quality improvement for 9-8-8, including updates for communication, training, measuring outcomes, evaluation, and service delivery.
CAMH is seeking a full time, contract (1 year) Data Engineer to support projects of 9-8-8 related to the use of digital health and AI technologies. Reporting to the Data Engineering Lead, the Data Engineer will work closely with the Enterprise Data Warehouse team and the 9-8-8 Evaluation and Research Team to support all aspects of the planning and execution of said projects.
The Data Engineer will build and maintain the critical data infrastructure supporting our mental health analytics initiatives, including secure pipelines for processing sensitive call and text transcripts while ensuring healthcare privacy compliance. They will establish scalable database architectures for historical and real-time data, develop ETL processes to transform raw transcripts into ML-ready datasets, and create real-time processing systems for live sentiment analysis and emergency intervention flagging. The role also involves implementing automated data quality monitoring and building integration frameworks that combine caller demographics, interaction history, and conversation metadata to power personalized recommendations and resource forecasting across all four use cases.
