Employment Terms: CasualStart date: August 2024The School Nurse provides nursing care to the student body, including assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of student health and health care programs, direct nursing care, and counseling services, in accordance with the guidelines and requirements of the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice, and the Health Discipline Act. Students can access health teaching, nursing assessment, advice and treatment, counseling, and general support in a confidential manner. This is an on-call position, hours are based on coverage as needed.Key Responsibilities and Tasks Nursing Care and Counseling: Carry out thorough nursing physical and/or mental health assessments of students that present feeling unwell, injured, or expressing concerns about their social-emotional wellbeing;Provide emergency assessment, first aid and health care to ill or injured students, and determine if additional care is required (e.g. doctor, emergency room care);Conduct COVID-19 and Viral Respiratory related assessment, management and monitoring of students who become symptomatic or ill at school;includes supervision of students in a dedicated isolation space on campus and following up and engaging with parents, faculty and staff to ensure local public health authority and ministry guidelines are followed;Plan and implement individual care programs for students to address physical and socio-emotional health concerns, including administering over-the- counter medications and treatments in accordance with UCC policies and protocols, best practice guidelines or as prescribed;Provide counseling to students experiencing mental health problems, and refer forward if necessary to psychologist, counselor or outside support;Partner with the school community, outside professionals and parents to identify general health needs;Collaborate with Health Centre colleagues and Residential team members around boarding students'health and Care Plans;Provide Health Centre support in the boarding houses, including occasional evenings and weekends as required;Complete incident reports and maintain student health records up to date.Coordinate individual health care plans with the athletic therapist where appropriate;Collaborate with Centre for Learning regarding academic support plans where necessary;Communicate where appropriate with faculty regarding Care Plans;Collaborate with Residential team around boarding students' health and Care Plans;Establish a presence and provide Health Centre support in the boarding houses, including evenings and weekends;Collaborate with Health Centre nurses and other Health Centre personnel as required to provide cross-coverage and continuity of care to the whole school population;Collaborate with the Director, Student Health Services to ensure coverage of both health centers and efficient communication of all Care Plans to administration and necessary faculty, Centre for Learning.Health Promotion: Develop and deliver health promotion programs to support overall health and wellbeing, including programs on nutrition, physical activity, mental health and wellbeing, healthy relationships, substance use, suicide, self harm and other topics relevant to the student body or specific segments of the student body;Provide education for parents, caregivers and staff on health promotion, disease prevention, childhood illnesses, and the control of communicable diseases;Develop and deliver training programs for staff to support students with prevalent medical conditions such as anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes, and/or epilepsy, as per institutional policy and in accordance with the Ministry of Education PPM - 161;Provide yearly Influenza Immunization to boarding students and employees as per medical directive;Liaise with Toronto Public Health to organize and deliver immunization programs, adhere to the Medical Officer of Health's recommendations regarding communicable diseases and students with incomplete immunizations;Ensure all policies are up to date and in accordance with Ministry of Education requirements and College of Nurses of Ontario Standards and Guidelines.Health Centre: In collaboration with other nurses, manage the health centre operation, including ordering and maintaining supplies, and medications, establishing and verifying cleanliness; standards, arranging for equipment maintenance and sharps disposal;and identifying new equipment needs;Complete and file insurance claims on behalf of boarding students;Maintain first aid kits across the school/college campus;Provide health advice for school/college employees as appropriate.Health and Safety Committee: Identify health and safety issues in the school/college environment, and contribute to their resolution as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee, to insure coordination and integration and of efforts;Plan and implement health and safety initiatives in the school/college.Job Requirements Experience, Knowledge and Competencies: Completion of university, college registered nursing program, and current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario. The nurse is accountable to the College of Nurses in maintaining registration and meeting professional standards of nursing care;Must provide valid and uptodate Professional Liability Protection set out by CNO, By-Law 44.4;Five years of general nursing experience / nursing children and adolescents , preferably in an educational or similar setting;Certification in First Aid and CPR (HCP level);Knowledge of health care theory and best practices for health care delivery, particularly related to children and youth;Knowledge of emerging issues in healthcare affecting children and youth , and recommended solutions;Knowledge of counselling theory and techniques for recognizing and treating mental health issues in children and youth;Knowledge of health centre operation standards, including cleanliness and infection control;Full knowledge of the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice, including limitations on practice scope;Knowledge of standards , emerging issues and best practices for the development and delivery of health and safety and wellness programs;Knowledge of all relevant legislation and regulations (e.g. Regulated Health Professions Act (1991), the Health Professions Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, PHIPA);Ability to assess emergency situations of illness or injury and determine immediate appropriate action and follow-up requirements;Ability to assess individual health issues of students and develop a plan of care and/or refer forward for more specialized care;Ability to interact with students, staff and parents on highly sensitive issues, provide advice and guidance, and gain their confidence;Ability to determine when and how to contact other health care professionals regarding the care of individual students or the student body in general, and to determine the appropriate disclosure of information.What We Offer Unparalleled opportunities for professional development including workshops, networking sessions, a leadership program, and visiting experts and scholars;Flexibility to substitute statutory holidays in recognition of diverse religious and cultural practices;Comprehensive medical, dental and vision plans, including health care and lifestyle spending accounts;Pension plan, generous vacation time, self-funded sabbaticals, parental leave top-upSignificant support for personal and family wellbeing and mental health, including the Employee and Family Assistance Program;Paid volunteer time off for involvement in the communities that matter to youSocial events for colleagues and their families;Collaborative and supportive team members and colleagues;Free on-campus parking.About UCC Upper Canada College is a place where tradition, excellence and innovation meet.
