Summary of Duties

The Neurosurgery Department seeks a certified Physician Assistant (CCPA) to join its well-established Neurosurgery program, to collaborate in the provision of clinical care, and to participate in quality improvement and patient safety processes. There is an existing active physician assistant training program throughout Sunnybrook HSC.

 

The PA staff is fully integrated into all components of departmental operations. The PA will function under a full set of medical directives, working in collaboration with a team of neurosurgeons, residents and trainees. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of academic activities.  

 

The successful applicant will provide clinical services for a range of patients including emergency, trauma and elective inpatients under the direct supervision of the Neurosurgery Department attending physicians and dually report to the Neurosurgery Patient Care Manager in the Tory Trauma Program.

  • Obtain health history as appropriate, including patient demographics, reason for referral, history of the present illness or injury, past medical, surgical, family and psychosocial history, medications, allergies and systems review.
  • Conduct comprehensive physical assessments and interpret findings with a neurosurgical focus.
  • Utilize primary and secondary assessment results to formulate a differential diagnosis and determine if further clinical investigation is required. 
  • Order and complete preliminary interpretation of necessary diagnostic tests.
  • Collaborate with the inter-professional neurosurgical team (Allied Health, Nurse Practitioner, Nursing, Neurosurgery fellow, residents and attending’s).
  • Formulate a treatment and management plan based on assessment and investigation results, availability of services and special needs of patient.
  • Optimizing discharge planning in an inter-professional team setting.
  • Collaborate with the team on quality and patient safety initiatives.

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Certified or eligible to be certified through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council (PACC) and  National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) will also be considered
  • Membership with the Canadian Association of the Physician Assistants
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work in an inter-professional healthcare environment
