Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has an opportunity for a qualified Occupational Therapist (OT) to work Tory Trauma Program ICUs. This Trauma ICU OT is one of 2 OTs who work flexibly across three Trauma ICUs to address patients’ presenting cognitive, behavioural and functional needs related to ward transfer, repatriation or discharge. The OT will collaborate with interprofessional team members in the ICUs to complete initial assessments and then transfer accountability to a ward OT.

 

Summary of Duties

  • Collaborate with established interprofessional ICU teams to provide person-centred OT assessments and interventions for medically fragile patients, including recommendations for preventing/ reducing Observer use, reducing restraint use and optimizing functional gains
  • Actively participate in interprofessional team activities such as developing role clarity, clinical rounds, team huddles and quality improvement initiative
  • Build trusting relationships in established team environments
  • Manage multiple tasks and effectively prioritize a daily caseload
  • Maintain clinical record keeping and complete workload measurement
  • Act as an occupational therapy expert resource for staff, students, and healthcare providers
  • Maintain and upgrade knowledge and skills through continuing education and professional development
  • Seek opportunities for involvement in practice-based research and engage in knowledge translation through evidence-based practice and implementing best practices
  • Participate in profession-specific and interprofessional activities in support of the Sunnybrook Occupational Therapy service and the Tory Trauma Program
  • In support of Sunnybrook’s full affiliation with the University of Toronto, participate in teaching occupational therapy students on an ongoing basis including acting as a preceptor for fieldwork placements; supervision of one or two student placements annually is expected.
  • Practice in accordance with regulatory body (COTO) standards for practice

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • Registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario required
  • Membership and insurance with one of CAOT or OSOT required
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills to work in teams
  • Minimum 2 years’ acute care experience required, with preference for ICU experience
  • Experience working with patients who present with complex health issues, including multi-system traumas, neurological and orthopaedic traumas, and general surgery required
  • Strong early cognitive assessment experience, including behavioural management
  • Demonstrated ability to prevent and/or wean continuous observation required
  • Experience with ABI, including mTBI/concussion screening, and ability to tailor intensive family education for complex ABI patients preferred
  • Ability to recommend assistive devices and call bell access for functional use of upper extremities in patients with quadraparesis and spinal cord injuries
  • Hand therapy and custom thermoplastic splinting experience a strong asset
  • Strong time-management, prioritization and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with electronic documentation and computer literacy required

  • Demonstrated commitment to Person-Centred Care approach and principles
  • Ability to demonstrate reflective practice
