CONTRACT TO PERM- Senior Java (Spring) Developer with Kafka and SQL experience to support derivative and wire settlements initiatives with one of our major banking clients- 38726

Location Address: Hybrid - Toronto 1-2 days/week - subject to change and increase in the future

Contract Duration: 6 months (MUST CONVERT TO PERM)

Schedule Hours: 9am-5pm Monday-Friday; standard 37.5 hrs/week

• Business group: GWRT - GCMT Securities Operations Technology - Operations Technology Team within Global Banking & Markets Engineering at Scotiabank is accountable for delivering and overseeing technology initiatives that enhances operational efficiency and scalability across global business lines. This role supports the execution of platform changes and manages internal systems and stakeholder relationships critical to Global Wholesale Operations (GWO). This is an opportunity to work in the fast-moving and exciting world of Capital markets. • Project: The Senior Manager, Derivative and Wire Settlements, provides technical expertise in developing a global platform for derivative and cash settlements. Operating in a senior capacity within a platform development team, the role drives delivery of cross-regional projects and system upgrades, enabling process optimization and platform modernization for GWO. Looking for a Dev Lead to help forward projects, specifically in the payments platform - settling derivatives space.

Typical Day in Role:

• You will lead the effort to build a payment settlements platform, working closely with business and technology teams to shape the roadmap and manage the solution. You will also help reduce risks by coordinating across teams and ensuring smooth operations in your area. You will manage project delivery and solutions to address complex business challenges. Working with cross-functional teams, you will help build scalable, high-quality solutions with strong controls that meet compliance and risk requirements while delivering value to business partners and customers.
• Partner with key stakeholders - including business users, product teams, managers, and technology groups - to gather and analyze business requirements, translating them into actionable plans and functional specifications.
• Lead efforts to modernize applications, enhancing operational efficiency, aligning with enterprise architecture standards, and maintaining software currency across the bank’s systems.
• Provide mentorship and leadership to the Development team, supporting the Director/Senior Manager with input on performance evaluations and development planning.
• Contribute to multiple concurrent projects as a team member, including support for production and lower environments during both standard and off-hours.

Candidate Requirements/Must Have Skills:

1) 8+ years’ experience in IT industry preferably working on the finance domain or relevant experience.

2) 8+ years’ hands-on development experience in Java, Spring Framework, Kafka & SQL (preferably Oracle)

3) Experience with system design, system development, data modeling, and software development life cycle (SDLC)

Nice-To-Have Skills:

- Experience with payments, settlements, advice and statements (FI to FI customer credits, FI Credit transfer etc.)

- Experience in Agile/Scrum software delivery model

- Experience with Google Cloud technologies, Google Compute Engine, Kubernetes Engine, Terraform, Cloud SQL

- Experience with Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Excel

- Experience in a lead type of role

Education:

Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related discipline

Senior Back-end Java developer who has worked in settlements, payments before.

Has led a small team as eventually the role will transition into a lead capacity - they will start by leading a small module/piece in application and would ideally develop to lead a team

Systems and platforms for settlements/payments - in house-built team (on 3rd party platform) however if they have derivatives settlements knowledge like Murex or Calypso it will help advance

Front end also in Java so Java knowledge is good enough
