Description
The Senior Manager, Financial Reporting & Accounting Policy is responsible for the preparation, analysis and review of Ontario Teachers’ semi-annual consolidated financial statements, annual report and related materials for the Audit & Actuarial Committee. This role’s purpose is to ensure accurate reporting on the financial position and results of operations of Ontario Teachers’ (including the impact of investment subsidiaries and administrative entities) and that accounting policies across the organization are aligned with applicable accounting and regulatory standards.
In this role you will conduct research and analysis related to the implementation of accounting policies and exercise judgment and decision making to maintain a robust control environment supporting financial reporting across the organization. You will also be involved in efficiency and effectiveness projects and initiatives related to financial reporting, internal controls, financial data integrity and finance systems/tools.

What you'll doFinancial reporting and analysis
Responsible for preparation and review of Ontario Teachers’ semi-annual consolidated financial statements and note disclosures, ensuring adherence to applicable accounting standards and guidelines.
Responsible for preparation and review of the annual provincial matching report and financial information reported in Ontario Teachers’ results release, annual report and website
Responsible for preparation of relevant materials for the executive team, Disclosure Committee meetings and Audit & Actuarial Committee meetings, as required
Perform analysis and analytical review to respond to review comments and understand key variances and year-over-year changes in reported information
Support Ontario Teachers’ semi-annual term debt program updates and subsequent debt issuances, in collaboration with internal legal counsel and treasury
Coordinate annual rating agency review meetings and internal reviews of rating agency reports
Manage the external audit process, including the mid-year review and year-end audit of the consolidated financial statements
Implement and maintain relevant controls over financial reporting
Accounting policy
Responsible for development, implementation, and maintenance of accounting policies in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for pension plans, IFRS and other relevant standards
Responsible for providing technical accounting guidance and support to internal stakeholders on complex transactions and new initiatives, preparing accounting position memos and summarizing accounting treatment options and recommendations as applicable
Monitor changes in accounting standards across various jurisdictions and assess their impact on Ontario Teachers’ consolidated and/or subsidiary reporting. Prepare and present accounting policy updates and recommendations to senior Finance leadership
Develop and maintain a network among pension plan peers in accounting policy functions. Share ideas to promote best practices in the industry
Collaborate with external auditors to address policy-related matters
Special projects
Support other financial reporting requests as required (peer benchmarking, surveys, ad-hoc inquiries from users of financial data, etc.)
Make recommendations and lead the implementation of operational improvement projects and initiatives related to financial reporting
Support enhancements to financial data, systems and reporting, including increased use of straight-through processing and data attributes to facilitate improved internal and external reporting and analysis
Support the execution of special projects by researching requirements, analyzing alternative solutions, assessing impacts to risks and processes, and providing a recommended course of action
Coordinate internal audits as they arise
Management accountability
The Senior Manager will be responsible for creating, managing, and monitoring financial reporting and internal controls workplans, organize accountabilities, deliverables, ensure adherence to deadlines and timely outcomes
This position carries responsibility for helping manage the activities of external advisors and auditors whose activities are highly visible and impactful to the organization
The individual must possess management leadership skills to direct and/or influence the efforts of others, as required
Develop and mentor staff, help identify training and on the job opportunities (including cross team opportunities) to enhance ongoing professional development of staff
Stay current on the strategic direction of Teachers’ and the Finance Division to determine how best to support those strategies
Stay current on accounting, auditing, internal controls standards, frameworks, and industry developments
Effective communication across teams (e.g., able to translate objectives into team’s activities), deploy change management best practices, when required
Decision making
This position is a direct resource to senior management and is expected to evaluate complex multi-faceted accounting and finance problems and provide advice and guidance through well researched and thoughtful recommendations that enable effective decision making
Effective decision making will require excellent analytical skills, judgment, independent and creative thinking - ability to think through problems, assess a variety of factors, and quickly implement solutions
Makes recommendations for changes to process, internal controls, and finance technology
Relevant university degree (accounting focus)
CPA designation required
Deep knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and/or Canadian accounting standards for pension plans
Familiarity with other relevant accounting frameworks (including US, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, and/or India) is an asset
Experience with asset management and awareness of financial reporting best practices for pension plans and/or financial institutions
Finance systems knowledge, experience in data structuring and development straight-through processing and reporting specifications
A high level of tech-savviness, influencing the adoption and development of new tools and technology for reporting (e.g., FSM BI, Workiva, Power BI, Alteryx), automation (e.g., RPA), data integration (e.g., Snowflake, Python)
Knowledge and advanced skills in PowerPoint, strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
Ability to work with internal stakeholders and balance governance and service role
Minimum 10+ years of related work experience in public accounting and/or financial reporting. Experience in accounting policy is an asset.
Successful track record in people leadership and management
Excellent communication skills and experience translating technical concepts into practical guidance
Experience developing senior executive level communication and presentations
Successful track record delivering on process improvements projects
Proven ability to balance competing priorities, work independently, manage projects and competing deadlines, and thrive in a high-performance team environment
Professional and proactive work ethic, excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to collaborate effectively and drive consensus
Project Management experience is an asset
