Manager, Information Design (14 month contract)

The opportunity

The Information Design Manager will lead prioritizing, overseeing, and directing the delivery of information design services across the organization. You will also lead and influence practice of analytics design, data, and information visualization across Teachers’. This includes leading projects and initiatives where data visualization, dashboards and information design are critical.

Who you'll work with

You will work with various partners across the organization this includes Investments, Finance, Enterprise Operations to support critical business needs. You will develop strong relationships and demonstrate effective partnership with business in BI design and development.

What you'll do

Lead the team to deliver business requests:

  • Work with stakeholders within the organization to gather requirements and develop solutions to support the needs.

  • Based on team’s capacity, experience, and skillset to prioritize and assign resources.

  • Provide direction/guidance as needed to support team’s successful delivery.

Deliver information design work for the organization:

  • Be an expert and leader in information design.

  • Lead visual design and implementation to support initiatives across the organization.

  • Design, implement, and deploy of accurate, visually appealing, and informative data displays dashboards, and presentation designs.

  • Lead UI/UX design for data analytics & AI applications and tools

  • Use design expertise to influence Analytical Engineering activities and data preparation.

  • Work with clients to draw business insights from data and present to clients as required.

  • Communicate results and ideas to key decision makers.

Lead data visualization training and community of practice in the organization:

  • Provide on-going training within the organization.

  • Share and promote internal and industry best practices.

  • Lead design and promotion of approved design patterns and standards.

  • Maintain and expand knowledge of information design, current technology, industry trends and best practices through coaching and training opportunities.

  • Manage information design requests from various business units across the organization.

  • Accountable for team’s day-to-day operations.

  • Support the team in delivering key reports, insights and visualizations per priorities set by the business.

  • Accountable for identifying opportunities and recommendations for improvements.

  • Accountable for timely communication to stakeholders on potential changes in priorities/timelines/deliverables.

What you'll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in related disciplines. Master’s degree in data visualization or information communication preferred

  • Passion for story telling with data.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in articulating design and analytic solutions/ ideas effectively for collaboration with business and IT partners.

  • Strong desire to work in a team-based and collaborative environment.

  • Ability to manage a team effectively.

  • Ability to quickly learn/adopt to new technology and approaches.

  • Strong problem-solving skills working in a team-based environment.

  • Excellent knowledge in design principles and applications in data-driven business areas

  • Excellent knowledge on data visualization

  • Strong knowledge of new BI technologies and industry trends (commercial software and open-source solutions)

  • Hands-on Business Intelligence development experience with Power BI or other data visualization software platform(s)

  • Excellent knowledge and demonstrated competency in data visualization, data storytelling and information design best practices.

  • Strong foundation in applying user-centered design process.

  • Strong visual/graphic design and UI/UX design skills.

  • Strong written communication skills are an asset.

  • Working knowledge of databases, data modelling, and data processing is an asset.

  • Proficient SQL skills in mining complex and multi-sourced data environment considered an asset.

  • 5+ years’ experience in practical design experience in data or information visualization

  • Prior experience at managing/leading team/projects delivery is an asset

  • Experience with developing standards and practices related to effective information representation, visualization techniques and report design

  • Hands-on Business Intelligence development experience with Power BI or other data visualization software platforms.

  • Positive track record of delivering UI/UX- driven BI solutions
