About the job
Reporting to the AVP Expense Management in Corporate Finance, the Director, Expense Management will help drive the expense management practice and framework across Sun Life including an enhanced focus on operating expense discipline, productivity and efficiency. The successful candidate will collaborate with finance leads in Corporate Finance and Business Groups to meet the overall planning and financial management information needs on expenses for the CFO, SVP Finance, and Executive Office.
What you'll be doing
Planning and forecasting:
- Management and consolidation of the expense component of the Strategic and Business Plan processes across the enterprise, highlighting key risks and opportunities on period to period expense movements
- Support the expense target setting and negotiation processes in the Plan cycle for the CFO, SVP and VP FP&A for discussions with BG Presidents and CFOs
- Continue driving forward the global expense efficiency framework for internal reporting and management, and support the introduction of the framework externally
- Advance and promote the expense reporting framework including key expense metrics, expense roll forwards, productivity savings, Expense Gaps
- Support proactive communication and demonstrate strong influencing capability across the expense management community to drive more consistent and collaborative practices and increased transparency
- Participate in the development and communication of expense related policies, guidelines and standards - roll out of changes to internal and external reporting pertaining to expenses
Reporting:
- Quarterly consolidated expense reporting and analysis to support external and internal reporting deliverables including the expense component of the total company Quarterly Financial Review
- Highlight quarterly expense drivers as they relate to prior year and current year plan, recommend expense classifications based on nature or type of spend
- Explore ways to optimize financial cycles, reduce manual effort and turnaround time, elevate the analytical output
- Consolidation and analysis of annual or other add-hoc expense/spend reporting at the enterprise level
- Ongoing monitoring, comparison and reporting of expense reporting by Canadian lifeco peers and Cdn Banking peers
- Ongoing monitoring and review of industry benchmarking that Business Units, Business Groups or Corporate functions may participate in
Problem Solving:
- Ability to problem solve across multiple stakeholders concurrently at the Corporate, Business Groups, and Business Units levels
- Strong ability to be flexible and supportive of new approaches, changing priorities and evolving timelines
- Ability to work under tight timelines, conflicting priorities, change and ambiguity
- Ability to analyze reporting approaches by life insurance company and banking peers
What you'll need to succeed
- Finance and accounting designation (CPA) with 10+ years of Insurance and/or Financial Services industry experience
- Business Unit and Business Group background including working with Actuarial partners would be beneficial
- People management skills with experience in coaching, developing and mentoring a team
- Familiarity with reporting in a multi-currency environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal, influencing and teamwork activity
- Attention to detail at multiple layers in expense management framework
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office
- Experience with Longview, Hyperion Planning and Reporting applications is an asset
- Experience with Business Unit or Business Group financial and expense management including finance and actuarial linkages would be preferable

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
