Job Description:
Sun Life, a global leader in financial services, is seeking an exceptional Technology and Intellectual Property Lawyer to join our legal team as Counsel at our headquarters in Toronto, reporting to the AVP & Managing Counsel IT/IP. This pivotal role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of law and innovation, supporting Sun Life's cutting-edge Digital Business and Technology Solutions team, as well as various Corporate Office groups.
The ideal candidate will bring expertise in technology law and intellectual property, coupled with a passion for driving digital transformation in the financial sector. As part of our dynamic and collaborative legal team, you'll play a crucial role in shaping Sun Life's technological future while navigating complex legal landscapes. Please note that this is a hybrid role requiring regular presence at our Toronto One York office.
What will you do:
- Provide expert counsel to clients on advancing legal issues in technology, data privacy, and intellectual property, encompassing software licensing, cloud computing, generative AI, information security, copyright, and trademark matters.
- Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial and technology-related agreements with precision and foresight.
- Offer strategic guidance on cybersecurity protocols and data breach response, ensuring compliance and risk mitigation.
- Maintain a deep understanding of emerging technologies and their legal implications, positioning yourself as a thought leader in the field.
- Foster cross-functional collaboration to address multifaceted legal challenges, leveraging diverse expertise for comprehensive solutions.
- Articulate complex legal and technical concepts clearly and concisely to internal business groups, facilitating informed decision-making.
- Design and deliver engaging training sessions on technology law topics, enhancing the knowledge base of clients and colleagues.
- Drive innovation through active participation in project-based work, contributing to Sun Life's progressive legal solutions.
What do you need to succeed:
- licensed to practice law in Ontario and have at least 3-5 years relevant experience in commercial law,
- able to engage and influence others with confidence, while building relationships across multiple areas of the business and working as a team player,
- a self-starter with a strong business acumen and the ability to effectively support simultaneous projects,
- a curious learner, proactively engaged to keep up with a dynamic and changing business and legal landscape for technology and intellectual property law,
- skilled at simplifying complex legal concepts to provide pro-active advice in a clear and concise manner, and
- able to take a risk-based approach to manage the prioritization of work in a high-volume environment.
The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
