Job Summary

The Team
The Nanaimo Law Courts team is a dedicated group of 24 professionals providing essential registry and in-court services to support the justice system. As part of an established team, you’ll collaborate with justice partners to ensure accurate case documentation, adjudication support, and seamless court operations. This team plays a critical role in promoting access to justice through its commitment to efficiency, fairness, and service excellence. The Role
As a Justice of the Peace, you will play a key role in supporting the justice system by providing court services and administrative support within the Registry. Your responsibilities will include receiving information, making judicial and quasi-judicial decisions, supporting registry staff as a senior team member, and ensuring accurate case file management. This role requires strong attention to detail and collaboration with judges, lawyers, justice partners, and the public. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent (e.g. GED)
  • Must have, or be able to qualify for, an appointment as a Justice of the Peace in the Province of British Columbia within one (1) year
  • Must have, or be able to qualify for, an appointment as a Deputy District Registrar within one (1) year
  • Must have experience using computers and software programs (e.g., Windows, MS Word, Excel)

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • One (1) year of experience working in Court Administration or two years of experience working in the justice system
  • Experience as a Justice of the Peace
  • Experience as a Deputy District Registrar
  • Experience with JUSTIN and/or CEIS
  • Experience with Civil and Criminal Programs
  • Experience with ARC and CTAS

Provisos/Willingness Statement:

  • May be required to travel, including travel in adverse weather conditions and work in other geographical areas, including circuit court locations. Must have reliable transportation and/or be willing to travel with others.
  • May be required to work flexible hours, including varied shifts and overtime on short notice.
  • May be required to use courtroom technology
