Alcoa is looking for a Senior Mechanical Equipment Specialist to act as a technical leader and trusted expert in industrial mechanics. In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring the reliability, performance, safety, and availability of critical production equipment while supporting operations, maintenance, and engineering teams.
About the rôle
- Provide expert technical support for mechanical equipment (diagnostics, advanced troubleshooting, failure analysis, technical recommendations) to maximize asset reliability and availability.
- Analyze equipment performance and participate in defining and optimizing maintenance strategies (preventive, predictive, and corrective).
- Collaborate with maintenance, engineering, and reliability teams to develop and deploy mechanical best practices within the facilities.
- Participate in root cause analyses (RCA) during major or recurring failures and propose sustainable corrective actions.
- Contribute to equipment investment and modification projects (technical reviews, design choices, commissioning, Management of Change - MOC).
- Ensure equipment compliance with health and safety requirements, including machine safety, guarding, lifting and rigging.
- Support and train maintenance and operations teams through technical knowledge transfer, drafting or updating work instructions and mechanical standards.
- Collaborate with procurement and suppliers to optimize component selection, standardization, and equipment lifecycle management.
- Participate in technical audits, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives related to asset management.
What you bring to the role
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent training).
- Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in a heavy industrial environment, ideally in the metallurgical or aluminum industry.
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical industrial equipment in an aluminum plant (power transmission systems, rotating equipment, structures, hydraulics, lifting equipment).
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems and contribute to reliability improvement.
- Good knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements applicable to industrial equipment.
- Strong teamwork skills, technical communication abilities, and capacity to act as a subject matter expert (SME).
- Autonomy, rigor, and strong results orientation.
- Proficiency in French and English (spoken and written), required for communication with operations and internal teams.
Important Assets
- Member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ).
- CMRP certification.
- Expertise in reliability and maintenance management.
