Tantalus Community School is located in the Village of Carmacks on the traditional territory of Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation. Situated at the confluence of Yukon and Nordenskiold rivers, Carmacks is 180 kilometers north of Whitehorse on the Klondike Highway. The Village of Carmacks offers amazing hiking and recreation opportunities as well as amenities such as gym and weight room, youth centre, golf course, and, a multi-functional indoor arena.
Tantalus Community School nurtures and educates around 112 students. Tantalus School strives to offer high quality instruction using the British Columbia curriculum while integrating a project and inquiry based approach. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor of Education or equivalent;
- Additional post-secondary coursework in related fields such as counselling and special education.
- Teaching experience at various grade levels across K-12, with attention to health and wellness curriculum programming and delivery;
- Experience in assessing and responding to student needs in social/emotional domains, life skills development, behaviour support, threat assessment and crisis intervention;
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement Individual Education Plans, Student Learning Plans and Behaviour Support Plans;
- Experience working in a First Nations setting and teaching First Nations students;
- Experience working as part of a school based/multi-disciplinary team would be an asset;
- Certification in Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA), Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, mental health first aid and restorative practices would be considered assets;
- Experience recommending/facilitating counselling supports with at risk school aged children and/or youth for further clinical counselling would be considered an asset;
- Restorative Justice Facilitator Training would be considered an asset.
- Experience and/or extra coursework in special education would be an asset
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:
Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:
- Strong client assessment and case management skills and an understanding of First Nations mental health and social issues;
- A philosophy of inclusive education; excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills to work closely with students, staff, parents/caregivers, consultants, related agencies, and the greater community in meeting the social, emotional and academic needs of all students;
- Strong planning, organizational, and documenting skills;
- Strong skills in legal and ethical decision-making, identifying and making appropriate referrals and in interpreting and implementing recommendations from specialized assessments;
- Solid understanding of the connection between restorative justice philosophy and the traditional practices on Indigenous cultures, and demonstrated ability to facilitate restorative practices, including talking circles;
- Knowledge of current mental health resources and all community resources required for K-12 students and ability to assist students in accessing these supports;
- Demonstrated ability to liaise with community supports and inter-agencies;
- Understanding of positive behavior interventions and an ability to effectively resolve conflict and manage crisis situations;
- Ability to co-teach with classroom teachers;
- Willingness and ability work as a member of a team to promote, support and work collaboratively with all staff members on multiple school goals and initiatives;
- Demonstrated ability to incorporate experiential learning and cultural practices into curriculum;
- Familiarity working with a culturally diverse student population;
- An awareness of the unique challenges of northern education;
- A commitment to live, work and participate as a member of a small, isolated, rural, and culturally vibrant community
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- To be a Teacher in Yukon, you must hold a Teacher Certification in another Canadian province/territory first;
- Successful applicants will be required to undergo a Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check;
- Relocation may be available;
