We are currently seeking a talented individual to join the Del Van Gorder School team . Del Van Gorder is a thriving K-12 rural school located in the picturesque, former mining town of Faro, Yukon. The school offers a highly academic, trades, and arts-filled program of instruction to its population of roughly 60 students. The school boasts modern facilities including, a home economics centre, wood and metal shop, and a full size gymnasium. Del Van Gorder School also compliments a music room, Community Library and is attached to the Yukon University Campus.

At DVG, students are supported by an amazing staff of 9 teachers, 3 support workers, and a host of community and parent volunteers. Faro students are friendly, caring, and helpful.

nd upstream from Selkirk First Nation Set amongst gorgeous mountains, Faro is surrounded by lakes and rivers with an abundance of trails (for hiking, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, ATVs, etc.) and big wildlife. It is a culturally diverse community of roughly 500 residents and, despite its small population, boasts an array of businesses and services unusual for a town of this size. These include an interpretive centre, a convenience grocery and hardware store, a recreation centre (with skating rink, squash court, weight room, gym, a seasonal indoor pool and community facilities), a health centre, a restaurant/bar, a Yukon University Campus, an arts society, a volunteer fire department, a liquor store, a golf course, a 24/7 cardlock fuel station, a territorial agent office, churches, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume, how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Possession of, or coursework towards a master’s degree in education or equivalent, in educational administration and/or elementary and/or secondary curriculum;
  • Experience in administration and substantial experience teaching in a school environment with diverse curriculum needs;
  • Experience or training in providing teachers with instructional leadership;
  • Background in inclusive education and working with learners with diverse needs and abilities would be an asset;
  • Experience working in a multi-grade classroom environment would be an asset.

NOTE: Candidates who have education, training and/or experience equivalent to the education criteria listed above will be equally considered

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND SUITABILITY:

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

      • A teaching philosophy that embraces experiential and inquiry-based educational approaches;
      • A strong pedagogical understanding of assessment for learning techniques and the ability to mentor teachers in their use;
      • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with students, parents, staff, the School Council, the First Nation and the community as a whole;
      • Eagerness to enable effective and complimentary educational strategies and plans with the school community, First Nation and the School Council;
      • Willingness to foster the school community programming;
      • A discipline philosophy that embraces positive behaviour intervention approaches would be an asset;
      • An understanding of Yukon First Nations cultural heritage and advocacy for the value of aboriginal perspectives in education;
      • The desire and commitment to live, work and participate in the life of a small rural community.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal Record/RCMP Check with Vulnerable Sector; to be provided before the first day of employment, dated no more than 3 months prior to your start date
  • Yukon Teacher Certification; learn about the certification process
  • Yukon First Nations 101, to be completed at your first opportunity.
  • To be an Administrator in Yukon, you must be certified in another Canadian province/territory first;
