Job Summary:

The Research Associate 2 possesses the qualifications and expertise to conduct research activities independently in collaboration with Primary Investigators and other researchers. The primary function of the Research Associate 2 is to independently perform a variety of research activities within a research program while developing strategies and capacity building to enable high-quality research. Duties may include oversight of other researchers and technical personnel and participation in various aspects of student research.

The Research Associate 2 also holds distinct and significant leadership responsibilities, delegated by the Principal Investigator, in addition to independent research responsibilities as outlined above. Such leadership responsibilities may include on-the-ground supervision of research personnel and/or leadership of the establishment and standardization of novel research activities. The Research Associate 2 will be relied upon to provide significant input into the direction of research and protocols and will lead and oversee complex studies and activities.

Qualifications:

Required:

Level of Formal Education & Experience

  • Preference of a doctoral degree or relevant degree in a related discipline, or a Doctor of Medicine degree
  • On an exception basis, those with an MSc and with a minimum of 7 years research experience and demonstrated ability to work independently may be considered.
  • Relevant experience and training conducting research independently post-degree, and experience with relevant research methodologies and study types
  • Significant experience with clinical trials and observational studies
  • Significant experience in relevant lab techniques
  • Significant experience planning and overseeing complex studies and activities
  • Experience in relevant statistical software packages
  • Experience in relevant qualitative data software programs
  • Experience managing advanced and complex datasets
  • Experience with knowledge synthesis and translation activities

An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated record in writing, including peer reviewed publications
  • Familiarity and experience in writing research grants applications
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to develop new projects and techniques

  • Familiarity with regulatory bodies and funding agencies

  • Some positions require incumbent to possess philosophy compatible with animal-based research.
  • Ability to complete relevant courses and/or obtain relevant certifications (e.g., WHIMIS, Animal User Training, human/animal ethics)
  • Must have satisfactory employment record
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada

Preferred:

  • Experience with project management
  • Experience in formally supervising others, including performance evaluation, motivation, organization, oversight and distribution of work, recruitment, selection, and hiring
  • Ability to speak French
