Position Overview
  • PATIENT CARE:
    • Checks regularly with the Front Desk CRN regarding changes/additions to the slate that may impact required anesthesia supplies or support.
    • Works under the guidance of, and in collaboration with the High-Risk Anesthesia Nurse in preparing for special cases.
  • PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
    • Responsible for activating air flow at 0630 in theatres to be used for the day.
    • Maintains anesthesia room and equipment in a clean and orderly manner adhering to cleaning schedules.
    • Ensures all equipment and supplies specific to the anesthesia room are returned to the proper storage units at the end of the day and are accounted for.
  • ANESTHESIA EQUIPMENT:
    • After every surgical case - remove and discard/clean used anesthesia equipment and replenish supplies. Routinely disinfects between patients and checks - blood pressure cuffs, cardiac monitor cables and O2 saturation probes.
    • Maintains adequate supplies for anesthesia requirements.
    • Check and restock the anesthesia drug cart daily to ensure adequate supplies are maintained.
    • Maintains adequate pharmacy stock in pre-operative waiting area by checking daily quotas.
    • Prepares for spinal/epidural/block anesthesia by maintaining supplies.
  • OTHER:
    • Sets up portable carts for all mobile endoscopies - ensures supplies are returned and cleaned.
    • Reports missing/damaged equipment to the appropriate CRN, Front Desk CRN or Clinical Manager.
    • On a weekly or daily basis, if required, collect and stock the supply of formalin containers from the laboratory - adjusts the quota accordingly.
  • COMMUNICATION:
    • Demonstrates effective communication and interpersonal skills in daily practice - pays particular attention to information required to be passed on to team members at shift exchanges/break times.
    • Works collaboratively with all Operating Room team members to ensure smooth functioning of the slate.
    • Responsive to the needs of other hospital departments and maintains a positive relationship.
    • Maintains confidentiality according to PHIA guidelines.
  • RESOURCE MANAGEMENT:
    • Maintains judicious use of all hospital supplies, equipment and resources, including human resources i.e. length of breaks: attendance.
    • Evaluates own performance and identifies own personal educational needs - discusses with Clinical Manager.
    • Facilitates the orientation/training/mentoring of new staff members in a positive manner.
Experience
  • Experience working with anesthesia equipment/ supplies preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Completion high school education, Manitoba standards required.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Health Care Aide program required.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Positive communication and interpersonal skills essential.
  • Excellent command of the English language (both oral and written) required.
  • Must successfully complete Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Training within the trial period.
  • On the job training will include: An understanding and application of safety principles to self, staff, and patients; a general understanding of aseptic techniques as they apply to the operating room theatres; preparation of surgical/anesthetic supplies; a general understanding of sterile processing, general knowledge of surgical/anesthetic instruments, equipment, and supplies.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
