Come work as a Privacy Advisor with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!
Reporting to the General Legal Counsel & Chief Privacy Officer, the Privacy Advisor plays a key role in assisting Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) departments and staff with privacy compliance. Within the VCH Information Privacy Office (IPO), the Privacy Advisor acts as the primary liaison to clinical and business areas to provide support and guidance to leadership and staff on proper privacy practices. The Privacy Advisor acts as the primary point of contact for general privacy inquiries. Working in consultation with the Chief Privacy Officer, the Privacy Advisor develops privacy education and awareness programs to promote a privacy conscious culture within the organization. The Privacy Advisor leads in the investigation of actual and potential privacy breaches. The position also provides support for the completion of privacy impact assessments and the development of privacy-related policies.
As a Privacy Advisor with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:
- Lead in the development and implementation of the IPO’s privacy education and awareness programs, including conducting presentations to staff at various VCH sites and developing online learning modules.
- Act as the communication lead for the IPO, including developing notices, guidelines, brochures and maintaining the IPO intranet site.
- Keep track of external and internal privacy trends and communicates relevant information to members of the IPO.
- Maintain up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of VCH’s policies, forms, procedures and practices in respect of privacy and confidentiality in order to advise VCH staff on proper privacy practices.
- Act as the primary point of contact for general privacy inquiries and respond or assign responsibility for responding to the appropriate IPO staff.
- Lead in the investigation and resolution of actual and potential privacy breaches.
- Lead in the communication, implementation and enforcement of IPO policies and standards.
- Work with the Privacy Analyst to support the IPO’s Privacy Audit Program.
- Assist VCH departments and staff in the completion of privacy impact assessments.
- Assist in the development of privacy-related policies.
- Assist with other IPO projects and initiatives as necessary.
- Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately report unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
Education & Experience
- Degree in Health Information Science or related program and five (5) or more years of experience in health information management or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of privacy principles and their application to access and use of health information.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and deliver education and training programs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking skills.
- Strong understanding of privacy principles and need-to-know access to health information.
- Knowledge of applicable BC privacy and health-related legislation.
- Understands how to create effective and efficient processes and systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong understanding of computer information systems, databases and electronic information management.
- Effectively engages and manages stakeholders using tact and diplomacy.
- Change agent for the introduction and implementation of innovative and creative ideas, tools, templates and processes.
- Effectively builds consensus among groups.
- Safe handling of confidential and sensitive information.
- Excellent time management skills to prioritize and complete assignments and schedule activities.
- Skilled computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheet, graphics and database programs such as MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and database management functions.
As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
