Job Description:
Primary Purpose
The Electrician is assigned to the maintenance, installation and operation of low and high voltage equipment up to 14 KV and electrical distribution systems on campus and to providing trade/job instruction and work direction to lower classifications and others as required.
Responsibilities will align with the Plant Operations goal of contributing towards providing a safe and accessible, invitingly clean and comfortable, functionally-enriched and well-maintained campus environment through service excellence.
Key Accountabilities
Maintenance & Repairs
- Installs, maintains and repairs electrical distribution systems and associated electrical equipment including but not limited to, cables, motors, starters, fuses, relays, transformers, lighting systems, communication systems, distribution and control circuits, equipment and appliances, balancing rotating equipment, replacing motor bearings.
- Through a preventive maintenance program ensure the safety of the distribution system from 14KV to low voltage systems.
- Develops and maintains compliancy programs.
- Troubleshooting electrical issues using appropriate testing devices.
Operations
- Working individually and/or in coordination with others.
- Coordinating work assignments when required.
- Requisitioning of materials and elements of design for special projects.
- Reading, interpreting, and updating electrical diagrams and blueprints.
Health & Safety
- n consideration of the University’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all faculty, support staff, students, and visitors, responsible for ensuring University facilities and departmental activities are compliant with all applicable legislation, regulations, codes and standards related to facilities operations as well as occupational health and environmental safety.
Other
- Coordinates the work of employees assigned to assist with tasks.
- Performs work of other trades as required to the limit of their skill, training and code requirements.
- Works cooperatively with other trades, service providers and contractors.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Must have a minimum of a grade 12 diploma or equivalent and electrical apprenticeship.
- Must have a current and valid provincial trade certification in Electrical Maintenance and Construction (309A).
Experience
- Five (5) years recent experience as a certified Electrician.
- Work experience within a major institutional sector(s) such as education, post-secondary education, or health care sector is an asset.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Sound working knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
- Knowledge of motor controls, electrical installations and electrical preventative maintenance is required.
- Ability to install, operate, troubleshoot and perform maintenance on electrical equipment, controls and distribution systems is essential.
- Capable of reading and interpreting electrical diagrams and blueprints.
- Must be customer and team oriented, as well as self-motivated and able to work successfully with minimal supervision.
- Basic computer skills, ability to use email and MS Office.
