Job Description:

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the operational executive for SHNRI’s innovation, commercialization, and external funding portfolios

  • Translate VPRI-defined strategy into operating plans, governance structures, and performance frameworks.

  • Establish and oversee end-to-end operating models for innovation intake, evaluation, funding, commercialization, and scale.

  • Ensure tight integration with research operations, finance, legal, ethics, and hospital functions.

  • Design, implement, and operate SHNRI’s intellectual property, commercialization, and partnership frameworks.

  • Establish standardized policies, SOPs, templates, and deal pathways for IP protection, licensing, and spin-outs.

  • Provide executive oversight of innovation risk, portfolio prioritization, and return-on-impact.

  • Be responsible for SHNRI’s institutional grant and external funding infrastructure across pre-award, award, and post-award phases.

  • Lead the support of large-scale, multi-researcher, platform, and institutional funding initiatives.

  • Develop grant-readiness systems and decision frameworks.

  • Oversee funder reporting, audits, compliance, and performance tracking.

  • Co-own SHNRI’s financial operating model with the Research Operations Manager.

  • Oversee costing frameworks, portfolio-level budgeting, sustainability modeling, and audit readiness.

  • Prepare board-level dashboards, reports, and decision briefs

  • Participate as a member of the senior institutional representative to funders, industry, and academic partners.

  • Provide functional leadership and mentorship to staff and cross-functional teams.

  • Drive continuous improvement and maturity of SHNRI’s innovation and funding ecosystem

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate Degree in the following: Business, Finance, Science or Health field based

  • Master degree in: Health sciences or business or experience in public policy, innovation, or related field, or equivalent senior operational experience

  • Experience in biotechnology, healthcare industry, academic health sciences, innovation or research ecosystems.

  • Deep knowledge of research funding, innovation systems, and commercialization pathways.

  • Demonstrated experience building and running operating systems

  • Proved experience in managing enterprise-level complexity requiring integration of strategy, operations, finance, governance, and partnerships, with decisions carrying institution-wide implications.

  • Superb experience in prioritization, investment decisions, operating model design, and risk mitigation, and able to advise on strategic trade-offs.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the capacity to effectively communicate complex information

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Products

  • Advanced Project management and problem-solving skills

  • Exceptional organizational, planning, and time management skills

  • Proven ability to lead and collaborate effectively

  • Proficient in managing multiple, often competing priorities.

  • Exceptional public speaking and presentation skills

  • Intermediate knowledge on program/faculty development and faculty appointments

  • Strong knowledge in IP Law and Commercialization Processes

  • Knowledgeable in regulatory requirements in Canada and US

  • Knowledgeable in Business Innovation practices

  • Intermediate knowledge in Research Finance

  • Intermediate experience in Business Marketing

  • Strong strategic thinking skills with the ability to assess organizational goals

Nice to have:

  • Certifications in the following: Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS 2), Health Canada Division 5 or ICH-GCP
