ASSISTANT MANAGER / LEAD - INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

1.0 FTE - Temporary position - January 2026 to January 2027

Salary: $112,204 per year

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is committed to supporting the academic excellence and well-being of Indigenous students, and support of all staff. The Simcoe County District School Board is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Manager / Lead - Indigenous Education. This position will provide leadership within the Indigenous Education department in the areas of student achievement and culture. The Assistant Manager / Lead will provide supports to SCDSB staff and Indigenous students in collaboration with the Principal of Indigenous Education and Superintendent of Indigenous Education.

The Principal of Indigenous Education and Assistant Manager / Lead - Indigenous Education partnership requires trust and collaboration, while inspiring and motivating others and ensuring a culture of belonging. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, personable and will thrive working both as a team member and independently in a fast-paced and confidential environment. The ideal candidate will foster a safe, healthy, respectful working culture and will promote trust, accountability, and transparency in accordance with the school board's strategic priorities.

The primary responsibilities for this position include:

  • Providing leadership to staff in building system and classroom capacity in literacy, numeracy, First Nation, Métis and Inuit culture, rooted in trauma informed and responsive practices, that improve student outcomes related to well-being and academics.
  • Staff mentorship, coaching, and consultation.
  • Development and delivery of training related to team and department professional development goals.
  • Support the development and updating of operational policies and procedures; departmental documents, and website.
  • Support the development and updating of department related documents related to system initiatives, numbered memorandum, and administrative procedure memorandum.
  • Coordination, consultation and debrief incidents with system administration.
  • Review applications and content for in-school presentation requests ensuring consistency with school board strategic priorities, Indigenous Education strategy, and assessment of fit of cultural awareness and promotion initiatives.
  • Engage in cross departmental collaboration to plan for everyday academic, culture and well-being staff practices as they intersect with special education, diversity, equity and inclusion, mental health & well-being and student achievement (Central Leaders Team member).
  • Ensure compliance with relevant professional practice standards, records management, and other mandatory requirements (Human Resources, legislation (Education Act, PHIPA etc.).
  • Coordinate student post-secondary education placements within the Indigenous Education department;
  • Operationalize the Indigenous Education strategy and board strategic priorities;
  • Maintain relationships with Wise Council and Indigenous community partners through consultation and ongoing engagement;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Completion of a University degree in a related field, e.g. Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, etc. AND registered in good standing with associated professional college OR If an educator, be a registered member, in good standing, with the Ontario College of Teachers.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience working with children and youth.
  • Candidates may be considered with an equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by the board.
  • Experience in an educational environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Framework, Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action, National Inquiry into the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls and United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
  • Training in Behaviour Management Systems Training (BMST) or willing to be certified.
  • Demonstrated understanding of student achievement and career pathways, including strategies to support academic success and proficiency for Indigenous learners within educational contexts.
  • Deep knowledge of anti-racism, anti-oppression, reconciliation-based education, and intersectional identities, with proven ability to lead initiatives that shift organizational culture and foster equity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of a distinctions-based approach to Indigenous identity, aligned with Ontario Human Rights Commission self-identification principles, with the ability to recognize nuances and prevent misrepresentation to centre authentic voices, nationhood, and community-specific perspectives.
  • Experience facilitating cultural safety education for staff and students, creating environments that uphold cultural humility and nurture safe(r) spaces for Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
  • Commitment to protecting Indigenous knowledge and protocols, ensuring practices avoid appropriation, romanticization, or re-colonization, and uphold authenticity and respect for Indigenous ways of knowing.
  • Demonstrated leadership with transference of knowledge and building the capacity of team members.
  • Proven capability in providing supervision and coaching to staff that supports the promotion of culture and student achievement, and staff navigating matters related to culture and academics for students, and culture and curriculum for staff.
  • Proven capability to build relationships and effectively manage through collaboration, engagement, and transference of knowledge.
  • Proven ability to manage projects, and initiate change management through cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational and creativity skills.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Practice knowledge of relevant legislation, regulatory requirements and governing acts related to privacy, confidentiality, professional best practice, and education.
  • Ability to develop and expand successful collaborations and partnerships with internal and external school communities, and partners including Beausoleil First Nation, Chippewas of Rama First Nation, the Métis Nation of Ontario, Inuit and Indigenous and non-Indigenous community organizations, and post-secondary institutions.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with data management systems, SharePoint, MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook).
  • High level of communication, management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills exhibiting confidentiality, diplomacy, conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate time, resources, and staff.
  • Previous experience in a unionized environment is preferred.
  • The successful candidate must possess a valid driver's license- class G or greater. The successful candidate will be required to provide a copy of their driver's license. The nature of this position will require the successful candidate to service large geographical areas.

This is a full-time temporary position that works ten (10) months and ten (10) days of the year. This temporary assignment is scheduled from January 2026 to January 2027. The compensation for this ten (10) month and ten (10) day position is $112,204 per year, depending on qualifications and experience and will be pro-rated to the length of the assignment. This position is based on a thirty-five (35) hour work week.

Participation in the OMERS Pension Plan is mandatory for all full-time permanent employees,

even if currently in receipt of an OMERS pension.
