Indigenous Education & Learning Services Coordinator

The Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) is seeking motivated, energetic, team-oriented, and faith-driven individuals to join our community as the Indigenous Education & Learning Services Coordinator. This role provides leadership in supporting Indigenous education and advancing reconciliation initiatives, fostering understanding, belonging, and meaningful engagement for all students and staff.



Position Overview

The Indigenous Education & Learning Services Coordinator provides leadership and strategic direction to enhance Indigenous student success and build staff capacity across the division. This role advances reconciliation by supporting the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, fostering meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, and ensuring that Indigenous perspectives are embedded throughout the K-12 learning experience.

Reporting to the Director of Learning Services, the Coordinator leads the Indigenous Education Consultants, supports curriculum initiatives, health and wellness programs, and educational grants, and contributes to the development of Administrative Procedures. Through culturally responsive teaching, professional learning, and community collaboration, this position ensures an inclusive and supportive environment for both students and staff.



About Red Deer Catholic School Division (RDCRS)

Located in Central Alberta, RDCRS serves over 10,200 students in 21 schools across Red Deer, Blackfalds, Sylvan Lake, Rocky Mountain House, Innisfail, and Olds. The division offers:

Key Responsibilities

1. Student and Staff Support

Provide leadership in advancing reconciliation and the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action within schools.

Connect with and support Indigenous students and staff across the division, fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.

Conduct regular school visits to engage with students, participate in assemblies, meet with administrators, and support lead teachers.

Assist teachers in creating differentiated instruction tailored to the learning needs of Indigenous students.



2. Resources and Curriculum Support

Acquire, review, and support the development of oral, digital, and print resources to support First Nations, Métis, and Inuit curricular outcomes.

Provide K-12 classroom-level support to educators in identifying and implementing culturally appropriate resources.

Deliver professional development aligned with Alberta Education Teacher and Leadership Quality Standards for both teachers and administrators.



3. Culture and Language Integration

Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners to integrate Indigenous culture and knowledge into the learning environment.

Support planning and implementation of cultural events, presentations, and traditional ceremonies in schools.

Facilitate Cree language integration where possible and requested.

Promote understanding and practice of Indigenous protocols, land acknowledgements, and ceremonies among staff and students.



4. Collaboration and Community Engagement

Actively participate in Indigenous Education and Reconciliation initiatives within the community.

Collaborate with school leadership, teachers, Elders, and community partners to enhance Indigenous Education programming.

Attend Indigenous Education Cohort Meetings and communicate updates through school newsletters, announcements, and social media.

Work with career practitioners to support Indigenous youth transitioning to post-secondary education.

Develop and maintain a catalog of Indigenous education activities, including details on type, contacts, timing, and cost.



5. Program Development and Planning

Support long-term (five-year) planning for division Indigenous Education initiatives and assist Indigenous Education Consultants with implementation.

Oversee the accumulation and development of Indigenous resources.

Ensure appropriate display of Treaty and Métis flags in schools.

Identify and access grants to support Indigenous programming and initiatives.



6. Professional Learning, Classroom Support, and Administrative Duties

Support curriculum areas including health and wellness, literacy, numeracy, and English as an additional language.

Assist with the implementation of educational grants and related initiatives.

Conduct research and contribute to the development of Administrative Procedures.



7. Other Duties

Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Superintendent, Learning Services.



Qualifications

The successful candidate will:

Be an active, practicing Catholic committed to Catholic education

Hold a valid Alberta Teaching Certificate

Demonstrate leadership experience at the school or system level

Have expertise in indigenous culture and education, reconciliation initiative and curriculum implementation, instructional leadership, literacy and numeracy and wellness.

Demonstrate exceptional conflict management skills, maintaining composure and fostering constructive solutions in challenging situations



Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $133,000 - $140,000, commensurate with experience

12-month, out-of-scope position
