Accountability:

This position reports to the Shop / Fleet Admin Lead, further accountability is to the Transportation Manager. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance activities of the shop and is an on-call resource for operations or the mechanic assigned to buses requiring attention. The incumbent must be prepared to assist in all aspects of maintenance when required.

Working in a fast paced, demanding environment, the incumbent must achieve set standards of maintenance within budgeted costs and in accordance with company policy and procedure including OH&S Regulations and Government Inspection Standards . Also to be responsible through himself and other Technician or Apprentices, for performing all assigned tasks in a safe, efficient and effective manner. Not to be confined to shop activities alone, the position is also expected to conduct field repair work on down buses either within the city limits or in the rural areas.

Must work very closely with the Lead Hand (I or II), Shop/Fleet Admin Lead, Assistant Transportation Manager, Transportation Manager, dispatch, and driving staff. External relationships include suppliers, outside maintenance shops, and regulatory bodies.



Specific Accountabilities:
  • Adhere to company standards and processes in the completion of all documentation associated with equipment repairs, including the CVIP list and CVIP production.
  • Works to ensure that goals related to efficiencies and daily operational needs are achieved.
  • Follows procedures and guidelines as established by RDCRS.
  • Works with operations management to maintain bus availability and priorities.
  • Diagnose equipment problems as reported by operations personnel (drivers/dispatch).
  • Coordinate/Manage a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Suggests areas where training is needed. Assists with training apprentices. Is prepared to attend selected training programs ( e.g- skid steer; crane; first aid etc.).
  • Support Lead Hand (I or II) by fulfilling specific duties during his absence.
  • Radio Etiquette- Monitor radio for assistance .
  • Delegate work as required.

  • Attendance is Critical - Must report on time, must stay on the job, no unexcused or on-going absences.
  • Ability to avoid any/all confrontations.
  • Maintains positive and professional relationships with management, drivers, co-workers, and operational staff.
  • Consistently able to perform tasks related to position.
  • Day to Day job Performance - Meets standards.
  • Exhibits strong Analytical and Troubleshooting Skills.
  • Health and Safety Knowledge - Adheres to Company, Governments and OH&S Rules, Regulations and Guidelines.
  • Ability to work safely.



Qualifications:

Education

  • Journeyman Ticket (Heavy Duty - preferred).
  • Minimum Grade 11.
  • Shop Management Courses (an asset).

Training

  • Valid Driver's License (Class 2 ideal).
  • CVIP - Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program License.
  • “Q” Endorsement (Air Brakes) (an asset).
  • Technical School Bus related training (an asset).

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years related experience ( an asset).
  • Exposure to working on diesel engines.
  • Ability to drive standard shift vehicles.
  • Analytical and Troubleshooting Skills.
  • Ability to read, operate and comprehend diagnostic and manual measuring tools.

  • Must have hand tools to perform all tasks associated with position
  • Must be able to read and comprehend parts and service manuals
