Job Summary: As part of the Central Administrative Council and the senior leadership team, the Superintendent of Business/CFO provides leadership, guidance, and strategic direction across all areas related to the school division’s financial and business operations .

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Establish objectives for the school division’s business operations aligned with the division’s strategic plan and priorities.
  • Oversee the school division’s business operations, including the Facilities and Transportation departments.
  • Leads, prepares, and reviews the school division’s annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor and report on budget performance throughout the year for senior management, the board, and the ministry.
  • Ensure appropriate budget and accounting controls are in place.
  • Direct the preparation of school division and school-based year-end financial reports to facilitate the audit and to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Education.
  • Acts as the signing and chief budget officer of the school division.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, controls and evaluates the operations of the business department.
  • Plan and manage the school division’s cash flow.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with other entities.
  • Ensure board meeting minutes are recorded and handle all matters pertaining to the school division’s Business areas.
  • Supervise all matters related to the acquisition or disposal of real and personal property owned by the school division.
  • Implement and maintain policies, procedures, and guidelines pertaining to the business Function.
  • Administer and supervise the school division’s insurance and inventory control programs, records management, land titles, and trust funds.
  • Advise on corporate governance and regulatory compliance procedures for the business department’s responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties required or assigned by the Director of Education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Function as a highly effective Central Administrative Council team member.
  • Demonstrate high emotional intelligence.
  • Possess the ability to collaborate with others.
  • Has advanced knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and functions.
  • Has the ability to collect, compile, summarize and analyze large amounts of data.
  • Possesses the ability to communicate effectively with all staff and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates a strong ability to prioritize multiple demands, effectively manage time and complete large volumes of work.
  • Understands competitive bidding, legal, legislative and trade agreement requirements.
  • Ability to handle confidential material and maintain staff and student privacy.

Education & Qualifications:

  • A Professional Accounting Designation or a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance or other related discipline is required.
  • Five (5) years of related experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience with corporate financial software and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel) are considered assets.
  • Familiarity with public education and public finance is considered an asset.
