Educational Assistant

100%, Regular (10 month work year)

$29.54 to 36.70 per hour

Under the direction of the Principal, the Educational Assistant is an integral member of the school team and is responsible for the provision of support to students with exceptional needs within the school. The position involves dealing with confidential information and requires ongoing flexibility and variability. Responsibilities are varied, in collaboration with teaching and other professional staff, and include: supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and students with developmental disabilities; participation in pool programs, academic support, implementing special programs, support to deaf/hard of hearing or visually impaired students, physiotherapy exercises and stretches.

Educational Assistants may be required to modify programs and support learning for students with learning disabilities, and speech/language issues. Assignments may also include outside yard duties, lifting, toileting, and/or pool duties. Knowledge of Ontario Curriculum and educational communication software such as Dragon and Kurzweil are assets.

Candidate Profile:

The successful candidate will possess a community college diploma in Developmental Services Worker, Child and Youth Care/Worker, or equivalent, and a minimum of 1-2 years of related experience with school aged special needs children. Equivalent programs must be assessed by People, Culture and Leadership staff. Valid First Aid certification/CPR Level C is required. The successful candidate will have also completed Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, TCI, and/or Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training. Please ensure that you include copies of your diploma(s) and/or certificates that are applicable to the qualifications of an Educational Assistant.



Required Skills and Abilities :

• DSW/CYW

• FSL environment

• Autism Experience - 5 years experience

• Assistive Technology - Google Read/Write familiarity with other software products to support students to access learning and curriculum

• Behaviour Modification

• Behaviour Management Systems

• Suicide Intervention

• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

• Ability to problem solve, collaborate with a variety of stakeholders while working as a member of a team, and critical thinking required daily.

• Experience managing very high behaviours

• Experience supporting medical needs

• Computer Skills

• CPR and First Aid

• PIC Symbols • Communication aides, i.e., touch talkers

• Prepared to do pool duties

• Prepared to assist with toileting • Prepared to assist with lifting

• Yard duty

Additional Comments: ASD classroom - BMS, wearing PPE daily, following multiple Safety Plans is essential, assisting with developmental goals for toileting, feeding, life skills,
