Educational Assistant



OVERVIEW

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board operates a Cooperative Education Summer School Program for students to have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience directly in the workforce through in person placements. This year, we will be offering the opportunity to students with developmental disabilities/autism.

Anyone offered and accepting work within the program is afforded protection through district policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of their work, including Health & Safety.



The 2025 Summer School Cooperative Education program will be offered in person.

** All EAs are expected to work from a designated Summer School site and travel (via OC Transpo) with the student to their Co-op work placement site.



Session Dates:

  • Cooperative Education program : Wednesday, July 2 - Thursday, July 24, 2025 (17 days)

  • Pre Placement dates: July 2, 3 and 4 at Brookfield High School



Rate of Pay: $27.45 per hour + 4% in lieu of vacation or the Educational Assistant’s current pay during the school year

Locations: Continuing Education building at 440 Albert St and students’ placements

Hours of work: 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday

Note: Hours of work may be adjusted at the discretion of the Program Principal

Under the direction of the Program Principal, the Educational Assistant is an integral member of the program and is responsible for the provision of 1 on 1 support to students with exceptional needs. The position requires ongoing flexibility and variability. Responsibilities are varied, in collaboration with teaching and other professional staff, and include supporting students with their learning both inside the classroom and within the community. Educational Assistants may be required to modify programs and support learning for students with developmental disabilities/autism, and speech/language issues. Other related duties may be assigned by the teacher and/or Program Principal. Assignments will include travelling to the student’s work placement, supporting the student during their day at the work placement and communicating their experiences and observations with the program staff. Important Note: ASL level 3+ would be an asset.

Qualifications and required Knowledge and Education: Secondary School Graduation Diploma along with training and experience with children with special needs. The ability to work as a team member under the direction of a teacher and a high degree of patience and understanding are required. Knowledge and understanding of specific social/emotional and physical needs of students with learning disabilities, behavioural challenges, developmental disabilities or physical challenges, as well as BMS and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, First Aid and CPR will be considered an asset. Experience in job coaching, travel training and strong observational skills and communication, both written and oral, are assets.

Offers of work will include specific response parameters, including timelines to accept/decline the offer. These timelines may be short (24 hours) and may be sent over the weekend.
