Education Director

Summary :

The Education Director will plan, organize, direct and control all education activities to ensure continuity, proper functioning, and productivity to attain the specific educational goals and direction provided by TFN Chief and Council, the local education authority, and/or TFN community.

Responsabilities :
  • Provide vision and direction for the Education Department, including early childhood, elementary, secondary, post-secondary, and adult education programs.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support education staff, ensuring a professional, collaborative, and student-centered team environment.
  • Develop and implement departmental work plans, policies, and performance measures.
  • Ensure effective delivery of all education programs and services, including special education supports, tutoring, cultural programming, and student assistance.
  • Lead the development of new initiatives to address community needs, including adult learning, skills training, and cultural revitalization.
  • Oversee and monitor student success, retention, and graduation outcomes.
  • Manage departmental budgets, funding agreements, and reporting requirements with accuracy and accountability.
  • Ensure compliance with TFN’s Financial Administration Law and ISC reporting requirements.
  • Pursue new funding opportunities to strengthen and expand education services.
  • Serve as TFN’s primary liaison with District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1), post-secondary institutions, and other education partners.
  • Advocate for TFN’s interests in regional and national education networks.
  • Collaborate with families, staff, and community stakeholders to ensure educational programs reflect TFN’s priorities and values.
  • Support ongoing departmental reviews and realignment processes to enhance accountability and effectiveness.
  • Align education programs with TFN’s strategic goals, including pay equity, student supports, and cultural and language revitalization.
  • Report regularly to the General Director and Chief & Council on departmental progress and challenges.


Compétences recherchées

Education and expérience :

  • Bachelor’s degree in administration and/or education
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in management
  • Minimum 7 years’ teaching experience, preferably in a First Nations environment

Knowledge and skill requirements :

  • Knowledge of Timiskaming First Nation (TFN) services
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office programs, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of education systems in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • Knowledge of Algonquin language and culture is a strong asset
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, program development, and staff management.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, prepare reports, and ensure compliance with funding agreements.
  • Self-directed, with motivating leadership skills, including high levels of diplomacy, tact, initiative, and judgement
  • Ability to represent TFN with a professional image
  • Bilingualism would be an asset (English/French)

Working conditions and benefits :
  • 35 hrs/week work schedule (Monday to Friday).
  • Overtime may be required to meet deadlines.
  • Two weeks paid leave at Christmas.
