Description
As a Principal Software Architect on the PowerPoint Live team, you will shape the long-term technical direction for how millions of people present and collaborate within Microsoft Teams. You will drive fundamental architectural change to strengthen PowerPoint Live’s core performance, reliability, security, and scalability while enabling new Copilot experiences that transform how users create and engage with content in real time. Your work will be deeply grounded in code but focused on long-term transformation-creating the frameworks, patterns, and client architectures that allow teams to deliver sustainable innovation at scale.
You will be part of a collaborative engineering group based in Vancouver, BC, and will partner closely with teams in Redmond, WA, Mountain View, CA, and other global locations. In this role, you will lead from the front, guiding through code and code reviews, connecting technical vision to business outcomes, and driving architectural excellence that defines the next generation of PowerPoint Live.

Responsibilities
- Define and drive the long-term architectural vision for PowerPoint Live, strengthening its reliability, performance, security, and scalability while enabling innovative Copilot experiences.
- Partner with engineering, product, and design teams to translate user and business requirements into cohesive technical strategies, system designs, and component evolution plans.
- Lead fundamental architectural changes that modernize core areas of the PowerPoint client, influencing cross-team investments and ensuring alignment across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.
- Lead from the front by writing and reviewing code, shaping engineering practices, and ensuring architectural consistency and quality across multiple layers of the product.
- Analyze and optimize critical systems to improve maintainability, performance, and resilience at scale, grounding architectural decisions in real-world code and telemetry.
- Research and apply relevant industry trends, frameworks, and emerging technologies to influence product direction and strengthen PowerPoint Live’s long-term technical foundation.
- Collaborate closely with partner teams in ODSP, Teams/CMD, M365 Core/IC3, and others to drive architectural alignment and deliver cohesive, high-quality user experiences.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 8+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, and C#;
- OR Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 12+ years of equivalent technical experience.
- 4+ years of experience in large-scale application platform or client architecture, driving system design and modernization efforts.
- Proven ability to drive fundamental architectural change and deliver long-term transformation that shapes product direction and business outcomes.
- Deep hands-on expertise and grounding in code, with proficiency in object-oriented design, debugging, analytics, and performance optimization.
- Experience designing and shipping software optimized for scale, reliability, security, and efficiency across distributed systems and client platforms.
- Solid capability to apply emerging industry trends and technologies to real-world product challenges, balancing innovation with practical execution.
- Demonstrated success in influencing cross-functional stakeholders and driving engineering alignment without formal authority, connecting strategic technical vision to customer and business needs.
- Experience using rich telemetry to make data-informed architectural decisions, guide experimentation, and measure long-term success.
- Record of collaboration across disciplines-engineering, design, and data science-on both rapid iteration and long-range architectural investment.
- Grounded in a growth mindset, fostering continuous learning and improvement across teams.
- Customer-obsessed and passionate about product impact, consistently advocating for user experience and business value.
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $142,400 - CAD $257,500 per year.
