Purpose:

Sales: Leadership in packaged cylinder gases, hard goods, and safety sales across geographic regions, emphasizing customer service, product and materials management, and national account oversight. 

Marketing: Guiding strategic marketing initiatives, including market segment and product strategies, project execution, and capital expense planning. 

Analytics: Overseeing data-driven strategies to optimize business performance, ensuring accurate reporting, identifying trends, and collaborating across teams for insights-driven decision-making. 

 

What you’ll do:

  • Active member of the Canadian Executive Team.

Ownership of profit and loss

  • Analyzes and drives business performance to achieve or exceed expected new business and customer profitability results, ensuring that business is optimized to provide the best possible return.
  • Drives cross functional business planning process to ensure resources are allocated optimally to achieve Messer’s objectives. 
  • Oversee P&L responsibilities for packaged gases, hard goods, and safety businesses, driving performance and managing risks.
  • Maximizes present and long-term sales and profit in the region, utilizing financial and business acumen to make good commercial decisions.
  • Manages and mitigates identified account risks associated with the customer base across country.
  • Shows visible leadership with safety and mitigates the effects at local operations in order to minimize impact on customers, personnel, business performance and the community.

Customer Acquisition, Satisfaction & Retention

  • Manages contract expiration dates of agreements.
  • Develops and leverages high level, strategic relationships with key Messer customers.
  • Ensures pricing is based on Messer’s value creation and unique selling proposition.
  • Expects sales manager ownership of each account within territories and monitors customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure Sales resources are allocated optimally to achieve Messer’s Sales objectives.
  • Resolves escalated customer complaints to drive customer satisfaction and proactively ensure root causes have been addressed.
  • Monitors customer and industry news, updates, and impending events that create market opportunities.
  • Expects Sales Managers to be current on market share, product supply position, and new developments with competitors and industry trends.

Future development and growth of the business

  • Develop and implement sales and market strategies, including account strategies for major customers and national accounts.
  • Inputs to and executes strategic plans for markets segments, products, and specific account strategies for customers and prospects within sales territories and region geography (Business Development)
  • Drive future development and growth through market understanding, strategic planning, and effective supply chain management.
  • Drives cross functional business planning process to ensure resources are allocated optimally to achieve Messer’s objectives.

People management and champion of safety

  • Inspires a desire to win and excel.
  • Lead and manage Sales, Marketing, and Analytics teams, emphasizing safety and ethical operations. 
  • Train, coach, develop and manage sales team; address performance issues proactively and promptly.
  • Fosters open communication and creates atmosphere in which timely, quality information flows within team.
  • In coordination with HSEQ, drives the safety agenda to ensure Messer operates in a manner that is safe for employees, customers and the public at large.

 

What it takes:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, MBA preferred, with 15+ years of senior management experience in industrial environments.
  • Commercial development experience preferred, along with broad industry knowledge and financial acumen.

Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Thorough understanding of general management principles.
  • Proven Management experience directing a team (direct, indirect) with history of team leadership and capabilities building.
  • A strategic thinker with strong Leadership and change management and analytical skills.
  • Critical and innovative thinking, strong financial and business acumen required.
  • Strong focus on coaching and developing people.
  • Self-motivated and performance-driven.
  • Charismatic, people-oriented and an effective communicator regardless of the audience.
  • Advance knowledge of the packaged gases processes and products is preferred.
  • Superlative communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate good judgement, time management, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Deep attention to detail, adherence to process and organization.
  • Proficient in English and French.
