This role can be based out of these locations: BAF - Barrie Warehouse, T50 - Mississauga Meter Shop, TCT- Trinity, or N14 - Haldimand SC

General Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical Distribution Standards and Material support services, and leadership in the provision of such services, to personnel in the distribution function on such matters relating to materials management, equipment and material acquisitioning, new technologies, standard designs, and maintaining and operating of the DES.
  • Prepare technical specifications for purchasing requisitions for material information systems, services and equipment. Follow-up with procurement and provide necessary technical services during field installation.
  • Coordinate and recommend research and development programs required to improve equipment or system performance. Follow-up on such research and development work and coordinate, as required. Provide all necessary information and assistance to facilitate such programs.
  • Receive assignments from Supervisor; identify potential problems, issues and opportunities in assigned areas for disposal/resolution; consult/discuss proposed solutions, as required, with other personnel and from task groups as necessary or expedient. Submit recommendations, including appropriate documentation and rationales for review and approval or for forwarding up the line, if necessary; give due regard to safety, security, reliability, operability/maintainability, economy and appearance. Discuss implementation of approved solutions/resolutions with people concerned and ensure, where possible, needs are met.
  • Monitor in collaboration with others the performance of the DES with respect to established standards, methods and criteria; identify problems, issues and opportunities for improvement; and with approval, resolve or initiate studies to resolve DES performance deficiencies, collaborating with others as necessary. Promote understanding and use of established policies, standards, criteria and methods.
  • Research and develop new technologies from concept to implementation. Plan, organize and schedule work to meet required deadlines for client satisfaction. Provide appropriate input to the section's work program/budget and its resourcing.
  • Maintain an awareness of technological advances in work tools, equipment, processes, databases and practices to enhance work management and execution. Initiate changes to improve efficiency.
  • Develop, maintain or update engineering, operating and other specified department standards, criteria, guides, methods and procedures. Receive assignments from Supervisor relating to these and identify potential problems, issues and opportunities. Discuss these with field operating personnel, users or others, as required, to ensure current principles, policies and practices are recognized. Prepare new or revised documents consistent with having acceptable safety, reliability, operability/maintainability, and human factor principles.
  • Prepare reports or provide information, data, or advice in answer to external requests or for historical purposes. Initiate studies or investigations where opportunities for improvements are apparent. In some instances, these opportunities may be identified by the Supervisor. Collect or arrange for collection and analyze data from past events or operations. Deliver presentations. Provide explanations and answers to questions received from recipients or reports.
  • Develop or contribute to the development of computer programs or provide appropriate technical specifications/requirements to the appropriate computer function, to study and solve problems on the DES. Determine future needs for computer systems and programs.
  • Periodically, as directed, supervise technical staff. Allocate assignments, provide instructions and check work progress and accuracy. Provide technical guidance, as required, assist in resolution of work problems and train new staff in job responsibilities.
  • Keep abreast of technology in the distribution field including participation, as a technical representative in internal and external committees, as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Selection Criteria:

Education:

  • Preference is for incumbents to possess their Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) License (P.ENG License) and seal to approve engineering work done by themselves or others. Consideration will be given to non-P.Eng staff with relevant experience, with the ability to acquire a P.Eng in the short to mid-term, assuming enough P.Eng’s are on staff to assist with approving/sealing documents.
  • Requires a knowledge of electrical theory, electronics, power system analysis and control, mathematics, computer science to carry out engineering, economic or analytical studies related to the management and control of the electrical power system.
  • Requires a knowledge of English and technical writing to prepare the necessary reports and tendering documents and to effectively communicate with internal and external contacts.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training (Grade XII plus 5 years) or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Requires experience in distribution systems construction, operation, maintenance and systems to understand design practices, physical and performance characteristics of equipment and materials, work methods, administrative systems and joint use agreements.
  • Requires experience with utility work practices, and maintenance and performance standards.
  • Requires experience to understand organization and reporting relationships and policies and procedures.
  • Recommended experience related to design estimates, commissioning, property rights and easements, Large Customer connections, Inter Business unit coordination, power quality and tingle voltage, the Distribution Code and maintenance of distribution assets.
  • A period of over 8 years and up to and including 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
