Human Resources Supervisor – 1 Year Contract

Mission Statement: Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.

Location/s: 90 Shuter Street / Hybrid

Position type: Full Time, Contract

Hours of Work: Monday - Friday, 9am to 5pm with some flexibility

Contract period: 1-Year contract

Salary: $67,500 annually

We are seeking an HR Supervisor to provide support with our workplace accommodation and performance management processes. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring that all requests for accommodation and job protected leaves are reviewed and processed with strict adherence to applicable legislation and provide information, resources, and support to employees throughout the process. This position maintains and enhances Homes First Society’s Human Resources by administrating, planning, implementing and evaluating human resource policies, programs and practices. This position reports to the Human Resources Managers, supporting with workplace accommodation processes, processing of job protected leaves, and performance management, while adhering to the mission statement, policies and procedures of Homes First Society.

Job Description:

  • Review and update workplace accommodation processes to ensure that employees are supported and working safely. Updating workplace accommodation and leave documents and other related policies and procedures.
  • Support a team working to process accommodations and leaves, as well as processing complex cases
  • Provide guidance and support to managers and employees on performance-related issues, including performance improvement plans and disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Provide support with the administration of grievance processing.
  • Identify opportunities for employee development and training to enhance skills and performance.
  • Stay informed about updates to legislation, best practices and trends in workplace accommodations, performance management, and employee engagement, and make recommendations for process improvements.
  • Prioritizing and assigning responsibilities and duties to team members and communicating job expectations
  • Ensures legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource legislation and requirements such as Employment Standards, Ontario Human Rights Code, Pay Equity, Employment Insurance, WSIB and the Ontario Health and Safety Act, and the Collective Agreement;
  • Maintaining records and representing Homes First Society at trainings and meetings.
  • Sitting on interview panels as needed.
  • Maintaining management guidelines by preparing, updating and recommending human resource policies and procedures and ensuring consistent application across Homes First
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, participating in professional organisations and representing the organisation at external forums
  • Maintaining both external and internal confidentiality
  • Ensures Homes First Society operations by working collaboratively within all departments to ensure the achievement of the mission of Homes First Society.
  • Preparing and submitting reports and forms by required dates; keeping current on trends, information and issues related to homelessness, poverty, housing, mental health and addictions
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in human resources or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3-5 years experience of Human Resources in a unionized environment
  • Experience in supervising staff
  • Experience in policy development
  • Knowledge of all relevant employment legislation
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in word processing and spreadsheets, Microsoft 365
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the homeless population, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices and systemic reasons for homelessness

Working in an environment where there may be smoke is required.
