Job Description: The Community Mental Health Nurse (CMHN), reporting to the Manager of Mental Health & Addiction Services, is an essential element in a comprehensive Mental Health Service. The CMHN has extensive knowledge of the evidence-based principles and practices of Community Health Nursing. A large portion of the CMHN's work is based outside of the clinic working independently. Each skilled CMHN is expected to monitor and administer medication, assess clinical status, provide case management, develop behavioral treatment programs, provide coverage for other recovery services team members, provide counselling and education and provide various forms of psychotherapy, including individual, family and group therapy. A CMHN provides health promotion, education and early intervention/prevention to the communities they work in. This position works in an integrated manner with other mental health and addiction programs.

Experience

  • 2 years of recent RN/RPN experience in acute psychiatric or community psychiatry

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (BScPN)

Licenses

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license
  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS)

Other Education and Training

  • Psychiatric Nursing diploma is acceptable
  • Nursing diploma is acceptable
  • Bachelor of Nursing is acceptable

  • Knowledge of Community Mental Health Nursing and Rehab standards demonstrated
  • Knowledge in the area of management of complex clients and psychogeriatrics

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide relevant educational services
  • Ability to communicate client assessments and articulate outcomes 
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to exercise independent nursing judgement
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound clinical judgement
  • Uses critical analysis, reflective practice and assessment.  
  • Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting workload to accommodate client needs.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in the area of psychopharmacology
  • Ability to develop and deliver formal education programs
  • Knowledge of the Saskatchewan Mental Health Act
  • Ability to learn new skills
  • Knowledge in models of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery
  • Ability to refer to, network, and work cooperatively with community agencies   
  • Ability to prioritize and be flexible
  • Proven ability to cope well with sustained work related emotional pressure
  • Ability to take initiative
  • The ability to conduct needs assessments & develop & deliver presentations.
