Under the supervision and direction of the Provincial Manager, SCTCTP, the Clinical Informatics Resource Nurse (CIRN) is a clinical operations and clinical informatics subject matter expert. This position integrates clinical nursing expertise with informatics skills to improve the quality of care, through reporting to the CIBMTR (a mandatory requirement of cellular therapy programs), enhancing the use of technology utilization for data collection and reporting, and optimization of workflows.
The CIRN provides advanced clinical expertise in cellular therapy-specific knowledge. The CIRN uses advanced communication and leadership skills to establish and comply with mandatory data collection and reporting requirements, while also using advanced problem-solving techniques and the application of nursing and family theories to resolve program problems and concerns. The CIRN will be cognizant of patient care and safety issues and work with leadership and staff to resolve those issues.
The CIRN collaborates with the cellular therapy team, CIBMTR and IMS, providing relevant nursing clinical knowledge and information related to the support, implementation, management, selection and auditing for CMS and CIBMTR. The CIRN collaborates with IMS and CIBMTR, other clinical care teams, and providers to develop appropriate training content for user groups as well as coordinate staff education. The CIRN will work collaboratively to support all disciplines reporting to CIBMTR.
The CIRN will be responsible to support nursing and clinical processes, provide direct user support, and manage the evaluation of efficient and effective use of CMS and CIBMTR ensuring they are effectively used to support evidence-based practices, improve patient outcomes, and streamline workflows. The CIRN provides the SCTCTP department technical training in the CMS and data reporting requirements for super-users, trainers and front-line staff.
The CIRN must be familiar with the clinical operations, concepts, processes, and workflows related to patient care and throughout the cellular therapy process and may advise clinical care team members and providers on how to use the CMS applications, how to collect and report data effectively to meet and comply with CIBMTR needs. The CIRN will rely on their extensive experience and judgment to help plan and accomplish provincial goals related to the CMS and data reporting requirements.
The CIRN will lead the establishment of a data reporting program including CIBMTR and other mandatory reporting within the SCTCTP and will be involved in various projects or smaller changes related to the CMS applications and data program. In this regard they will lead and collaborate to integrate data requirements with clinical processes to ensure accurate and comprehensive data.
The CIRN will participate on, and be a knowledgeable CMS, CIBMTR and data resource to, various clinical working groups. Travel between Regina and Saskatoon is expected within this role and across Saskatchewan maybe necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Master’s, Bachelor’s or Diploma in Nursing
- Certified in Oncology Nursing Canada (CON(C)) or equivalent. Where this is not complete, the successful candidate is required to obtain certification within two years of date of hire to the position.
- Certification for Basic Life Saver (BLS) - C
- Valid driver’s license
Experience:
- Five (5) years of hematology nursing experience with a minimum three (3) years clinical experience as a hematology transplant nurse.
- A minimum of six (6) months experience of clinical management systems as a super-user or a subject matter expert on an implementation team.
- Experience in developing new processes or clinical workflows, conducting audits, testing, and reporting on compliance of clinical management systems an asset.
- Previous experience in nursing education an asset
- For certain CIRN roles, experience and proficiency working in disease site specific areas, inpatient and outpatient clinics and/or systemic therapy or experience with cellular therapy may be considered an asset
Licenses/Memberships:
- Licensed with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)
- Membership in the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) an asset
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong clinical knowledge of oncology practices, treatments, and patient care.
- Knowledge of new trends in oncology nursing and clinical management systems
- Ability to apply information technology in the clinical areas.
- Strong communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills to facilitate training and present information to various team members.
- Proficiency with clinic workflow, processes and a variety of computer systems and software applications
- Ability to train and mentor staff on the use of technology in clinical practice and act as a change agent.
- Direct awareness of problems or limitations that can exist in Clinical Information Systems and the effects those can have on various clinical areas. Develop clinical processes to support and mitigate risk associated with limitations.
- Able to understand the detailed technical operation of the CMS or CIBMTR portal, analyze technical software issues, clearly describe software issues to IMS or CIBMTR technical staff or business analyst, and assist in the design, testing and implementation of solutions.
- Ability to interpret detailed information and communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Able to identify clinical training needs and gaps as they relate to information systems, develop appropriate training material, and work in a ‘train the trainer’ environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple diverse stakeholders at all levels of responsibility both within the SCA and externally.
- Supports the evaluation of requests for system improvements, determining feasibility and advisability of system changes and providing this information to the working groups.
- Ability to work autonomously and/or collaboratively with a team to complete deliverables.
- Ability to prioritize and work efficiently to achieve deadlines and ensure stakeholder needs align with work team operating goals.
- Ability to coordinate and assume responsibility for work over others.
- Requires high degree of judgment and problem-solving ability and critical thinking skills to identify, analyze and define problems and determine the most appropriate pathway.
