GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Clinical Assistant - Oncology is responsible to provide support to a specific area in the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency Oncology Service as specified by the cancer care teams that include medical oncology, radiation oncology and hematology. The Clinical Assistant - Oncology provides care under the supervision of the Oncologist/Hematologist in the area for which they are trained.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The Clinical Assistant - Oncology will work in a shared care model in a specific area of Oncology or Hematology, in collaboration with oncologists.
The Clinical Assistant - Oncology is accountable, under the supervision of the Oncologists or Hematologists, for the care of Adult Medical, Radiation Oncology and Hematology in-patients through admissions, investigations, symptomatic management and coordination of ancillary services and discharge planning.
The Clinical Assistant - Oncology is accountable, in collaboration with Oncologists or Hematologists, for outpatient services that include but are not limited to evaluation of follow-up patients on treatment or surveillance.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- International Medical Graduates with a medical degree from a university listed in either the WHO or FAIMER directory.
- Must have passed Medical Council of Canada Qualifying exam part one.
- Passed English proficiency exam required by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.
- Current ACLS or an equivalent program in resuscitation appropriate for the physician’s domain of practice.
- Passed the interview process and required verification of references as per SCA Human Resources (HR) policies.
Scope of Practice:
- The Clinical Assistant - Oncology will practice under supervision of an Oncologist/Hematologist within a limited scope of practice.
- Shared care practice in a focused area of Oncology or Hematology for which the candidate receives training at SCA.
- Practice will be limited to the area of training only.
- To obtain history, perform physical examinations, evaluate results of diagnostic blood test and imaging scans, and perform toxicity assessments of treatment among others.
- Write common prescriptions and continue systemic therapy including chemotherapy, immunotherapy and endocrine therapy under the supervision of a qualified Oncologist/Hematologist.
- Provide afterhours support to on call Oncologist/Hematologist.
- Provide support to Oncologist/Hematologist on the ward and in the chemotherapy/infusion clinic area.
